if you love Christmas… Don’t wait until December to start looking!

I know it’s August… And I know some of you are probably thinking, “Christmas already? 😂

But if you love Christmas, this is actually the perfect time to start looking. Start checking the thrift stores.

Look for vintage ornaments. Keep your eyes open for those special little things you may not find again. Because sometimes the most beautiful things are the things you find months before Christmas… And tuck away until it’s time to bring them out.

So I’m not telling you to decorate for Christmas in August. I’m telling you to start looking. Because when Christmas comes, you’ll be glad you did.

I stopped decorating by the rules… and my home finally became mine.

My little entryway is proof that a home doesn’t have to follow whatever style is fashionable this year.

Hand-painted Harlequin floors, a shelf and peg rail my husband built from my sketch, and a found bench. Each and every corner filled with the things that make a home feel wonderfully lived in… coats, hats, handbags, little treasures, trinkets and curiosities gathered along the way.

In the corner a gallery wall overflowing with pictures and frames. Antique books whimsically stacked and layered simply because I adore the visual effect. A little collection of curiosities for the eye to wander over.

And for fall, all my favorite soft neutrals mixed together with thrifted baskets tumbling toward the floor, pumpkins, and autumn foliage… layers upon layers of gathered treasures and seasonal finery.

None of it was bought to follow a trend. Much of it was thrifted, found, made, or collected over time.

And perhaps that’s what I love most about decorating this way… when you choose what you truly love, you don’t have to redecorate every time fashion changes.

Create a home filled with the things that delight you. Fill it with treasures, memories, trinkets and curiosities.

Let it tell your story rather than following a passing fashion.
Because fashions come and go… but a home you truly love never goes out of style.

Look what sweet little pieces snuck into my cottage from my friends cotton & crete.

Meet my vintage Professor Owl, the sweetest vintage-style papier-mâché candy bucket. I am in love with its whimsical charm. It is perfect for holding flowers, sweets, or a handful of autumn leaves.I also picked up the cutest haunted landscape lumbar pillow to dress up the couch, along with two sweet gray terracotta owls and an aged urn. Please forgive the speed of this video… I’ve had rather a lot going on lately. 😂

Keep reading, because I’m fairly certain the last few weeks deserve their own sitcom.

I know some of you prefer to linger over every little corner, and normally I would too, but this is a whistle-stop tour of fall around my home because life has been moving at a positively ridiculous pace!

First, I flew to Asheville, North Carolina, spent a week packing, helping my daughter sell bits and bobs on Facebook Marketplace, and donating most of what was left.

Then I drove 12 hours home with the car piled so high I looked like the Beverly Hillbillies. 😂

Once home, I somehow managed to help one daughter find an apartment… and then came the fun part! I thrifted furniture, a sideboard, a coffee table, and so many other beautiful pieces for her new place, put together a gallery wall, and found pillows to match. You’ll see all of that eventually… when I have recovered enough to lift my arms again. 😂

And because apparently I had entirely too much free time, my other daughter moved into her new place the next day, so I helped her move too. Up and down stairs all day🫠🤣

So, my dears, this speedy little fall video is all I could manage to cobble together between moving boxes, thrift shops, long drives, furniture hunting, gallery walls, and general family chaos.

At this point, I don’t need a holiday…
I need a hip replacement and a full-body massage. Preferably with a cup of tea waiting at the end of it. ☕😂🍂

At my age, I’ve decided a home should be filled with the things you love...

Not the things someone else says you should own. 🤍

I have tried minimalism, truly I have …. but beautiful old piece catches my eye, and before long it seems to have brought friends.

A clock face here, a walking cane there, old books, baskets, gallery walls of frames, architectural salvage, and all the curious little treasures that make a house feel as though it has been loved and lived in for generations.

I think that is what I love most about the old British cottage look... nothing feels too perfect or too planned. Things are collected slowly, tucked into corners, layered onto shelves, and gathered over a lifetime. Each piece has a little story, even if only I know it.

If my family ends up arguing over, who gets what someday, I’ll consider it a success🫣🤣🤣🤣.

Wait… How many times can this room change?

This is my little outdoor sitting room, and I don’t think I’ve ever decorated it the same way twice!

Even the cabinet gets reinvented. It has a diamond pattern on it, and I frequently change the color of the diamonds ♦️ sometimes I’ll even paint an entirely different pattern. That’s the joy of decorating to me.

Nothing has to be permanent.
Nothing has to be perfect.

Over the years, I’ve dressed it for autumn, Halloween, Christmas, spring and summer… and changed the colors more times than I can count.

Most of the furniture stays exactly where it is. My $70 vintage sofa and $50 cabinet always stay and then I just have a little play about.

A few different pillows can change the whole feel of the room. Add candles, flowers, leaves or greenery, change the colors, and suddenly it feels completely different again.

It’s been soft and neutral… blue… green… and pink.

I’ve filled it with autumn leaves and cosy candles, tucked in a little Halloween whimsy, dressed it for Christmas, and covered it in flowers for spring and summer.

And that’s what I love about decorating with old and thrifted pieces. You don’t need to start from scratch or buy a whole new room every time the season changes.

Once you’ve gathered pieces you truly love, you can simply bring them to life in a different way.

Move things about. Change the pillows. Light a different candle. Add a new colour.
The room stays the same… but somehow, it never feels the same. 🤍

Folks, you don’t need a big budget to make a home feel beautiful 🍂 🌻

I found this sweet bench for song, and with my thrifted mantel tucked behind it, I created the simplest little autumn corner in my cottage.

A basket crate overflowing with apples, leaves draped along the mantel, cheerful sunflowers, and a plethora of baskets gathered all around… just proof that you don’t need much to make a corner of your home feel like fall. 🤎

Look what’s tiptoed into my cottage from my friends over cotton & crete 🦉🍂

The sweetest little vintage-style Professor owl has arrived, a papier-mâché candy bucket that is simply too charming!

I adore the whimsy of it, and it can be filled with flowers, sweets, or a handful of autumn leaves.

And oh, that sweet little witch’s broom! 🧹 If you’ve had your eye on one, hurry — they tend to disappear quickly.

For a little more cottage charm, I’ve added a 24” haunted landscape lumbar pillow to dress up a sofa, bench or favorite cozy chair.

Just a few little touches, but together they make my cottage feel as though it’s stepped right out of an old autumn storybook.

The older I get, the more I want my home to look like it belongs in Pride and Prejudice.

It all starts right at the front threshold. We used to have a cold, uninspiring metal door, but my husband and I lovingly disguised it under quarter-inch pieces of wood, transforming it into the rustic entry of my historical daydreams.
Bits of architectural salvage, a thrifted treasure or two, and suddenly I’m pretending my little Florida cottage is somewhere in the English countryside.

Around my entryway, I’ve layered the things I love …hand-painted Harlequin floors, lovely curiosities I’ve found along the way, and even a two-dollar basket that holds thrifted my walking canes.

Hovering just above it all is a whimsical peg rail shelf, complete with beautifully curved corbels. I handed my husband a quick little, daydream-fueled sketch, and like a true Regency gentleman, he brought it to life with his own two hands.
Nothing here has to be expensive. Nothing has to match perfectly.
I simply want my home to feel collected, cosy, a little whimsical… as though it has been gathering stories for a hundred years.

Perhaps that’s what happens as we get older.

We stop worrying so much about what a home should look like and start creating one that feels like us.

And if that means pretending my 1970s Florida house is a little cottage from pride and prejudice well, I’m happy to do that.

Your home doesn’t need a makeover… it just needs a few little whispers of autumn. 🍂

Let’s sprinkle little lovelies around your home rather than feeling you must redecorate every time the seasons change.

A few hydrangeas tucked around the door…
And please, don’t worry about the nail hole. A dab of putty and a touch of paint will make it disappear.

We’re here to live in our homes, not worry about a tiny hole in the wall. 🤎

Layer a few bowls, pop a pumpkin on top, add a sweet gingham cushion, your favourite autumn throw, and perhaps a little something cosy on the sideboard.

And if you happen to have a slice of pumpkin bread nearby… well, I certainly wouldn’t object. ☕️🍁

I’m always on the lookout for thrifted baskets, little pieces of furniture that need a bit of TLC, old books and, especially, frames for a gallery wall.

They don’t need to match. In fact, I rather like them when they don’t.

That’s the joy of a cottage, isn’t it?

Little things. Layers. A bit of imperfection. And a home that looks as though it has been loved along the way.

So don’t wait for the perfect piece or the perfect room.

Just sprinkle in a little autumn and enjoy your home. 🍂🤎
