Seibert Architects PA Seibert Architects has over 70 years of experience in architecture and planning. Craig AIA. History

Edward J. Now headed by Samuel C.

Since our establishment in 1955, we have been recognized as a leader of the Sarasota School of Architecture. Today we continue our legacy in architecture, interiors and planning with an award-winning team led by firm principal Samuel C. Holladay AIA and Michael Lee Epstein AIA with design team members Dale Parks AIA and William J. Seibert Architects offers complete professional services including

architecture, interior design and planning. The firm’s experience includes public sector projects, private residences, high rise condominiums, commercial offices, historical restorations, educational buildings, and large-scale resorts. Seibert Architects has received recognition for design excellence and its ability to solve architectural problems in a variety of work based on sensitivity to the Florida Gulf Coast environment and concern for its inhabitants. To that end, client participation is facilitated throughout the course of design to arrive at architecture that is programmatically and aesthetically reflective to client needs, site context, and budget. We continue to meet each new project with creative and effective solutions that balances the built environment with the natural environment creating a timeless architecture. Seibert FAIA began his professional career in the Sarasota office of the world-renowned architect, Paul Rudolph. In 1955, he established his own firm in Sarasota and was nationally recognized early in his career as a leader in what is now referred to as the Sarasota School of Architecture. His work was widely praised for demonstrating that excellence was possible even in small projects with minimal budgets. Using ordinary materials and strong geometrical forms he made a new architecture remarkably suited to Florida’s semi-tropical environment. As the scale and nature of his practice grew from small houses to large projects, Seibert and his design team demonstrated great versatility while continuing to explore and refine a design philosophy of articulate geometry and sculpturally elegant spaces. Today, Seibert Architects PA continues this design legacy. Holladay AIA, a member of the firm since 1972, and Michael Lee Epstein AIA, a member of the firm since 1989, Seibert Architects PA upholds its commitment to architecture as art.

The Thyne-Swain House was the first house of a series of houses designed and built by Edward J. Seibert and Builder Frank S. Thyne.

Like all the houses in the series, it is built on a 6’x16’ module. The beams are 2”x12” with a 3/4” separator, the posts two 2”x4” with a 3/4” piece in the center. The roof is framed in 2”x4” joists spanning between the beams. Outside walls are 8” concrete block, stuccoed on the exterior, furred and plastered on the interior. Floors are terrazzo.

The lot is in a rather crowded subdivision, so the house was designed as an “introverted” city house, facing in on its own courtyard. Those windows facing the street have wooden jalousies in combination with fixed glass.

At the time it was built, its selling price was $20,900.00 on your lot.

MHouse South is Forbes House of the Week. The following are comments from the Senior Editor:

“…What makes this architect’s work worthy of national attention and contributed to the firm’s landing on the list of Forbes Top Residential Architects in America 2025, is how a Seibert Architects house rises to the elevated occasion of high-art architecture. And how it does so while also managing—as too few houses do—to be both “smart” and “comfortable” simultaneously.”

The Betchel House (1967), designed by Seibert Architects, is now for sale.

The roof planes of the house converge toward the central garden. In the original design, the private courtyard was screened in and connected all the interior spaces via the courtyard. Large glass sliders and clerestory windows surround the courtyard. The house has three bedrooms, 2.5 baths, a private pool, and a garage.

Block House "B" is designed to fit on a site of limited area and irregular shape, this 2200 SF house takes the form of an open pavilion surrounded by gardens. Sliding glass doors and panels surround interior spaces so that expansive openness to the exterior can be enjoyed with doors open or closed. Lush vegetation forms a veil of privacy between the interior spaces and the adjacent street and structures.

The house utilizes exposed CMU as the defining material for exterior garden walls and the house’s interior and exterior walls tying the house and gardens together as an extension of each other with mostly operable glass between them. The main event is the glass lined space containing Living, Dining and the wooden box for the Kitchen. A CMU plane beginning outside as the side of the garage leading to the entry, running through the house and then back outside in the pool area, divides the house into public and private spaces. The pool courtyard includes grilling, plantings, seating, a spa, a lap pool, and an outdoor shower clad in recycled glass panels, which form a light-filled box hovering beside the lap pool for visual interest.
