Every year after my child’s birthday, I say, “Next year I’m keeping it simple.”

Apparently, this is what “simple” looked like for my daughter’s tropical pool party this weekend. 😂 I made the cake, cookies, cake pops, cakesicles, pretzels, Oreos, meringues, dessert cups, and then decorated the entire table.

I’m exhausted—but already saving ideas for the next party. Please tell me other bakers also suffer from this condition!

Fondant or royal icing—which is better for figures on cookies? 🤔

Fondant makes raised shapes, texture, and tiny details easier and faster, but it needs to be colored and dried before attaching. It also stays slightly soft, which matters when shipping.

Royal icing is cheaper, easier to find, and uses the same supplies and colors as the rest of the cookie. It dries harder, but creating raised figures and very small details can be more challenging.

This cookie looks complicated, but it’s completely beginner-friendly!

I used five icing colors and only two consistencies: outline and flood. The design combines solid flood icing, a wet-on-wet pattern, crusted layers, edible marker details, and gold painted over dry white icing.

Build it one color and one layer at a time, and the complex design becomes a series of simple steps.

Logo cookies: hours of careful piping… followed by another full-time job called packaging. 😂

Bag it. Seal it. Straighten it. Add the bow. Repeat 47 times.

Sometimes the packaging takes just as long as decorating—but at least they leave looking cute and professional!

I love drawing on cookies. 🎨🍪

Each cookie feels like a tiny canvas, and this is my favorite part—watching a character come to life one little detail at a time.

It takes patience and a steady hand, but I could happily sit and draw these sweet little faces all day. ❤️

This is how I make all my icing colors for a cookie set. 🎨🍪

I do use two different consistencies for each color — one for outlining and one for flooding.

For the yellow ribbon, I use a third, thicker consistency so it can hold its shape and give me that raised detail.

It definitely means more piping bags 😅 but having the right consistency for each job makes decorating so much easier.
