Incorporating native vegetation, storm resiliency, bio-filtration, and expanding the existing ecosystems, this Siesta Key residence exemplifies the application of each of these ecologically driven design principles to go beyond a “do no harm” approach. It not only protects the existing natural habitat and biodiversity, but actually improves them to help sustain the natural systems present.

For this Lido Beach residence, the site plan grounds the elevated structure in a series of resilient coastal gardens. At the entry, a shell-topped concrete driveway is fragmented by strips of grass that curve to mimic sea oats in the adjacent dune and allow infiltration. An entry courtyard is a garden-within-a-garden, offering a full sensory experience at the front door.

The role of environmental design in landscape architecture is monumental. By incorporating features like rain gardens, permeable paving, and drought-tolerant native plantings, we can mitigate climate impact and foster healthier ecosystems, shaping landscapes that prioritize both aesthetics and sustainability.

The pool and these private spaces for this home were designed by DWY in crisp geometries and material palette to link the landscape to the architecture. Along the west edge of the property, a paurotis palm adds verticality in a bed of native plants. Behind this bed, a fabricated aluminum screen, designed by the architect, slips under the floating house to provide privacy to the courtyard and lighting effects.

Designed for immersion, a cantilevered wood deck at the west end of the pool extends its form over the water allowing exploration and discovery at this South Florida residence. Rip-rap under the deck along the seawall creates a habitat for marine life, mitigating storm surge and tidal impact, and the massing of spider lily along the shoreline provides additional storm resiliency and filters nutrient load before it enters the marine water.

Creating a modern poolside aesthetic for this boutique Sarasota hotel, our team utilized tropical plantings. Curved coconut palms, railroad vine, philodendron wilsonii, and philodendron Burle Marx are among the species found in this design that help define the experience of the pool deck at the heart of the hotel.

Florida royal, sabal, and coccothrinax palms frame intimate experiences for both public and private courtyards as they punctuate the venue’s eave lines at Rebecca’s Wine Bar and Social Club.

Royal Palm, Roystonea regia: Our most spectacular palm, the royal is well-named. Regal and refined, with a cement-gray trunk that is rather tapered and more delicate than the bulbous-based Cuban palm, it’s slightly bulged in the center, topped by a bright, glossy-green crown shaft. Royal palms are sensitive to cold, and St. Petersburg is the approximate northern limit of their range.

The choreographed entry experience with dwarf fakahatchee contrasts with royal palms and a finely detailed gate at this Bird Key residence.

Dwarf Fakahatchee Grass, commonly known as Florida Gamagrass, is a smaller relative of Fakachatchee Grass (Tripacum dactyloides). This Florida native grass requires little water to grow and is low maintenance, making it a great addition to Florida-friendly landscapes.

The vision of this project was to unite the interiors with the exterior spaces, both visually and physically, yet not detract from the purity of the architecture. The planting, hardscape, and lighting design work together to create an experience for visitors and a wonderful setting for the expressive architecture.

Native sabals are retained, separating parking and introducing an organic form to the strict geometry, while additional native species screen and contrast the architecture.

The Florida state tree, the Sabal palmetto (aka cabbage palm), grows throughout the state and is found growing in pine woodlands, hammocks, and on riverbanks. These plants are tolerant of salt spray on foliage but are intolerant of salt in the root zone.
