Another soul-satisfying project!
Enjoyed working with this young family which was at its wit's end with their existing home layout.
Small tweaks created massive changes to the flow of spaces and using ALL the contemporary crayons in my color box we were able to give this home a cool facelift too!

Throw back Thursday!

One of our goals was not only to reduce ‘air leakage’ from walls, doors, windows, roofs but to also improve the ‘tightness’ of the envelope.Instead of using regular batt insulation we chose to spray foam the house. This not only improved the comfort level of the home but also reduced unplanned air leakages resulting unintended energy loss. The devil did lie in the details so we kicked it up a notch by testing the house for leaks AFTER insulation was completed but BEFORE sheet rock went up! Here we are using a ‘smoke stick to detect air movement indicating a gap in construction which needs to be sealed.

Happy to report that we lowered our ACH number from 9.05 to a 2.53!!

Fun to watch experiments succeed!Redirecting rain water from the roof into the rain garden by connecting the down spout to a pop up emitter. This not only reduces runoff that affects sea levels but also keeps water on your property and allows the earth to soak it in slowly.

Excited to see my first, two story project in San Jose making steady progress.This was a single story ranch home with the owners looking to preserve their backyard space and thus deciding to add to the top of their house. Converting an existing single story into a two story home is exciting and challenging in its own way. They require a lot of structural design in addition to space design.
