Wow what a night and day contrast from this time frame to now. Just holy cow. This is mack trl and three mile rd looking north into the soo
This photo from 1967 brings back some memories. We are looking north from the intersection of Mackinac Trail and 3-Mile Road. We can see the City Limits Cabins in the lower left, just south of Soden’s Market and Gas. I have fond memories of spending allowance on penny candy at Soden’s, while Mom or Dad was getting gas. Mr Soden was a kind soul.
The large building and parking lot on the left (west) side of the road, near the top of the picture, is the Tempo Department Store beside Norden’s Foodland, and King’s Radio and TV Service. I think the Knife and Fork Restaurant shares their parking lot. Directly across from Tempo are Drows Floral and Greenhouse and the Commodore Motel (with the visible swimming pool).
Just south of Tempo is the A&W (with the white roof), where we could stop for a delicious frosty mini mug of root beer. The next large building is, I believe, the Robin’s Nest Restaurant.
For the rest, I am relying on the 1967 and 1968 Polk Directories, which list the businesses on this stretch, but not their addresses. They don’t seem to be listed in geographical order, either.
At the northwest corner of the intersection is a trailer court that I don’t remember at all. The building just north of the trailer court looks, by the inventory of long members, like it could be the Cloverland Electrical Coop (where the Michigan State Police post now sits).
Directly across the road we see a large parking lot where Shunk’s Home Appliance and Furniture is under construction.
The remaining business listed in the Polk Directory are: Cavelier Service Station, Cedar Rest Motel, Snow White Motel, Hill Top Motel Cabins, Mo-Z-In Motel, King of Homes Trailers, and Benson Mobile. I am hoping our readers can identify some of these on the map.
