“But it was expensive! I can’t donate it or throw it away!”
This is a quote that I often hear from my clients. But this morning I came across a shirt that I’ve owned for 15 years. I don’t have a lot of items in my wardrobe that I’ve owned that long, but it got me thinking about that quote.
When we donate something from our home that cost a lot of money, we hesitate to get rid of it because it was a lot of money. But do we ever do the opposite? Do we ever look at something that we’ve owned for a long time and think, “I’ve definitely gotten my money’s worth out of this item!“ And to take that further, we would not think to ourselves, “I should get rid of this at this point because I’ve gotten my money’s worth.“
We just keep the item and don’t think about how it has benefited us for so long.
So take a moment today to notice how many items you have in your home that you’ve had for a while and that you got more than your money’s worth out of them. And maybe when you have to get rid of something that was expensive, it won’t feel as bad because you’re recognizing the benefit that you got from the other items. It all balances out.
