One of the benefits of the changes we made with fencing is there are some plants growing now such as lavender Culver's Root and Little Joe Pyew**d, baptisia and liatris that the deer either ate or broke off the past 3 years. It is so nice to see them all coming into bloom. And of course a daylily was never going to bloom like they are blooming now.
I think our persistance has rerouted the deer. It was way too easy for them before, easy pickings. They would stroll through daily.
I have not w**ded the beds behind the fences, and truly, the w**ds are not that bad as the plants are filling in, not getting stepped on.
Lessons learned. I had always thought fencing was useless unless it was 8 ft high. The whole thing I believe is about obstacles, making it harder. And if the deer have lots of clover and higher grasses to eat that are readily available, they are heading there instead.

There are 9 on these 3 feeders (2 hummingbirds are sitting behind) in this picture and we think we are at 2 dozen hummingbirds right now. They are constantly on the red bee balm, digitalis lutea and Major Wheeler honeysuckle.
We are just thrilled to watch them. In the evening hours, almost nightfall, they are quite active. I am so happy I planted more Jacob Cline and Bee Happy bee balm.

Beekeepers are asking us repeatedly, "How are you harvesting any honey right now, the hives are dry. The rain is washing all of the nectar away"
All John and I can say and have said is you have to plant flowers especially adding tubule type flowers to your landscape.
We also have been able to avoid the typical dearth in July for years that many beekeepers complain about. I know that no beekeeper wants more work, but it is what it is. It is the story of every farmer. You have to feed your flock.
No, we are not harvesting as much as we did last year at this time, but we are harvesting two thirds of the amount.
It just comes down to flowers, folks.

We relocate trees that pop up in flower beds. This white oak is a keystone plant, an essential native tree, and it is a host tree for up to 900 moths and butterflies. How could we possibly pull it out and add it to the w**d bin? We will let it grow a bit and then transplant it.

Weeding and working on the kitchen garden in the early hours of this morning. Tomorrow John will help me move a humongus amount of fennel and place it in the back on this bank as I continuously work to get rid of sea oats. Yes, I know it is native but I cannot deal with it.

I grow it for them.
