BAGWORMS!! The female can lay from 500-1000 eggs in that little bag! They hatch May through June. I, of course, don't recommend pesticides because that also kills off the good insects that prey on these damn things. Keep an eye on your plants! Keep them healthy! If you see any bags, pull them off and drown them. But - do it BEFORE MAY! Encouraging natural predators is also a great idea. For example - planting Shasta Daisy, Newfoundland Aster or Treasure flower in and around your garden brings the ichneumonid wasp which paratisizes the egg sack. If you must spray, the better alternative is Bt, it is a bacteria that attacks the gut of the larvae. This must be down during the hatching - May through June - simply call your local extension OR ME to find out best time to apply Bt.

Did you know?

* September is the perfect time to plant trees (this is because the weather has usually cooled some, there’s more rainy weather, and there’s enough time for roots to get established b4 the first frost).

* Time to stop fertilizing (fertilizing now will stimulate lots of new tender growth that won’t have time to harden off before freezing temperatures arrive.

* Plant bulbs mid-September and into October (a good rule of thumb is to plant bulbs roughly 6 weeks before the ground freezes or when regular nighttime temperatures are between 40 and 50 degrees.

* The best time to thin a shrub is late fall to early spring (branch removal will be less stressful to the plant when it’s dormant)
