Gladiolus: If you want a firework as a flower...this is the plant for you!! Starting off slowly and ending in a bang!!! Gladiolus are known for their showy flowers. Alot of florist use these in flower bouquets and cut flowers. Some people call them "Sword Lilies " for their long Sword like spike that blooms large flowers. Flowers can be in all different colors. Pink, red, purple, green, orange, white, black, and yellow to name a few. Blooms starts at the bottom and works their way up the spike.Blooms usually last 7-12 days in Mid Summer ( July). Avg size is 2-4ft tall with some varieties maxing out at 5-6ft in optimum growing conditions. This plant is Cold Hardy to zone 6b/ 7a (South of Pennsylvania Turnpike no special care is really needed, North of the Pennsylvania Turnpike to Route 78/81 PA I would make sure to plant them near a fondation on a southern facing location or dig them up and store them ). Plant corm in a sunny location about 6 inches deep in mid spring (April). It takes 90 days to bloom after being planted. They can tolerate some shade. Use fertilizer in spring and water throughout early summer till it starts to bloom. I would rate this flower a 10/10 due to it's gorgeous blooms and being able to use them as a cut flower. I love to hand these out to the public when walking by!!!😊🌺 Prices range from $10 for 10 corms to $50 for 75 corms.

Italian gladiolus: This is a cold hardy miniature variety of Gladiolus that is native to the Mediterranean regions. This variety is commonly confused with Byzantine Gladiolus. Beautiful specimen when in larger clumps that fills in vacant areas nicely. Beautiful small pink flowers that sprout off a "sword" looking main stem. Blooms earlier than the regular Gladiolus, in late Spring to Early Summer ( May on Avg, April in Warmer climates and June in cooler climates). Right around when the hardwood trees are leafed out.The blooms last 2 weeks to maybe 3 in cool weather. Cold Hardy to zone 6a ( Erie, Pennsylvania south east to State College due east to Scranton and south. Absent in the higher spots in the Allegheny and Appalachian Mountains. )Avg size is 1-3 ft tall with a maximum height of 4ft in optimum growing conditions. Grows the best in full sunlight but can tolerate part shady locations aswell. Plant the corm in mid fall to early winter ( October till December) . Plant corm 6 inches deep in organic rich soil. Plant usually dies back in the heat of mid to late summer ( July-August) and pops back up in mid spring (April). You can use fertilizer in spring if you like. I rate this a 8/10 for the time of year it blooms and the multi blooms it produces. Prices range from $10 for a bag of 25 corms to $75 for a bag of 150 corms.

Australia Canna: This variety by far is the darkest leafed canna out on the market. One of the exotic theme cannas, ( Australia, Bengal Tiger, and Durban) this variety is absolutely gorgeous! The foliage is dark redish to chocolate color and the blooms are cardinal red. Blooms from July to November. Consider a medium size canna, the average size is 3-5ft tall with a maximum height of 6ft tall at optimal growing conditions. When planting this variety, you can plant in full sun (6 + hours)or part shade ( 3+ hours of sun). Out of all the Cannas, this variety does the best in somewhat shady locations. Plant in late April or early May in organic rich soil. Plant 3-5 inches deep and water/feed throughout the summer....especially once temperatures hit 90° and above. This is considered a tender perennial in this region of Pennsylvania. Cold Hardy to zone 7 and ( Route 30 PA south, Mason Dixon Line, Baltimore and Philadelphia Area south) wouldn't be surprised if on a mild winter it could survive from the Pennsylvania Turnpike and south. I would rate this Canna a 10/10!! It's definitely a rarer variety and once again the foliage/blooms are so beautiful matching. Having the exotic trio in the same bed would be a WOW FACTOR 👌🏼 This variety is semi expensive and normally runs $20-30 a plant and $10-15 for rhizomes. I don't have any in stock yet and will be working next year to get a good bit of them.

Cleopatra Canna: This variety of Canna is the most unique of them all. Not every stalk or flower will be the same from one plant. The beauty is the two or even one tone foliage with flower aswell. Looks amazing in pots and planters with potatoe vines. Plant in early May , 2-4 inches in organic rich soil. Dig up in mid fall and store them in a cool dark location. ( Basements/ Garages)Sunny locations are best, but can handle morning shade and afternoon sun. 5+ hours of sun light is ideal. You can also start them indoors around February to get a good start to the growing season. Plant in mid May if going that route. Water and feed throughout the summer. Foliage can be green mixed with dark chocolate, just plain green or dark chocolate. The blooms can be a flashy red or yellow with orange spots in the middle ( similar to Picasso Canna). Blooms July to November. This is considered a small to medium size canna. The avg. size is 3-4ft with a maximum height of 5-6ft tall at optimal growing conditions. Cleopatra Canna is not considered to be a cold hardy variety. Zone 8a is it's limits ( Williamsburg, VA and Ocean City, Maryland south. ) So this is a variety that has to be dug up during fall. I would rate this variety a 10/10. I really enjoyed growing this Canna for the first time this past summer and definitely will keep this in my collection!!. Due to the uniqueness and being a newer hybrid, this variety is considered to be expensive. Plants can go anywhere from $20-40 and rhizomes are about half of that amount. I usually give thse up for $5 a rhizome.

Giant Musifolia Canna: If you want a bold and large statement in the flower bed, aswell as to turn your property into a tropical lush paradise, this variety cuts the cake! Musifolia means "Bannana like leaves " .This variety is the 2nd tallest canna on the market and only smaller to the Omega canna variety. Grande canna variety is considered 3rd largest and is almost the same size as the Musifolia. Avg size is 7-9ft tall with a maximum height at 10-14ft at optimal growing conditions. I'm 5.10ft tall and 7.5ft reaching height. Just look how much taller it is compared to me.....that's one plant aswell. Consider to be in the Extra-large canna category. The bronze foliage is giant aswell with leaves growing 3-5ft long. The blooms are red and orange flowers that tower over the foliage. Blooms July to November. Give this giant plenty of fertilizer and water throughout the summer and early fall. This will increase growth immensely. 🙌🏽 Plant in late April or early May, 4-6 inches deep in organic rich soil. Sunny locations are ideal.(6+ hours of sunshine daily. ) You may have to dig them up in late fall unless they are at a southern facing location near a fondation. The Musifolia Canna is cold Hardy to zone 7a (South of Route 30 PA in cities and towns. Mason Dixon Line and Philadelphia area south) Considered a tender perennial in the rural areas. I would rate this Canna variety a 10/10 due to the massive size and the amazing foliage. The foliage looks absolutely perfect when the sun is setting and you can see the veins with a green contrast. 👌🏼 This variety is commonly confused with the King Humbert variety aswell as the Bronze Cannova. But due time you will be able to tell due to the immense size difference between the three. The Musifolia Canna is semi expensive. Plants go for $20-35 and rhizomes $10-20. I charge $5 a rhizome. This canna is personally my favorite.

Bengal Tiger Canna: This variety is must have and really spices things up in pots and your flower bed. Very exotic colors on this one. Plant in early May in organic rich soil, 2-4 inches deep. You can also start them indoors around February to get a good start to the growing season. If going that route, plant in mid May. Dig up in mid fall and store them in a dark cool place over winter. ( Basements/ Garages)Sunny locations are the best, but can handle morning shade and afternoon sun. Make sure water and feed throughout the summer, it makes a difference! This variety is considered a medium size canna, Avg size is 4-6ft with maximum height 7ft tall in optimum growing conditions. This variety has very vibrant colors for the foliage and bloom. The foliage is lime and dark green stripes with some yellow and the bloom is a big, showy orange flower. Blooms July to November. This variety is cold hardy to zone 7B ( Baltimore, Maryland to Philadelphia South) and might make it through a mild winter just north of the Lower Piedmont.( Route 30 Pa south) Consider a tender perennial in rural areas, I personally would treat it like the Cannova Cannas and dig them up in fall. I would rate this Canna 10/10 and highly recommend getting it!! You won't be disappointed!! This is a expensive canna...plants go for $20-$40 and rhizomes $10-$20. I charge $5 a rhizome.

Red King Humbert Canna: This variety is a classic aswell! A well known cousin of the Indian Shot, these two are probably the most popular varieties. Plant in late April or early May, 4-6 inches deep in organic rich soil. Make sure to water and feed throughout the summer, it makes a big difference. You can leave these in the ground all year around, just got to down the dead stalks once the frost hits them. This is considered to be a medium to tall variety. Average size is 4-6ft, with maximum heights of 7 ft aren't uncommon in optimum growing conditions. This variety is a statement when place together with it's larger cousin. Cold Hardy to zone 6 B ( South of Route 78/81 PA) and can survive in the ground all year around south of the Ridge and Valley province. Just treat it like the Indian Shot. It's bronze foliage and red flowers really pop out when next to it's green counterpart. Blooms July to November. This bronze foliage is also found in two different varieties of Cannas aswell. Cannova has a similar looking variety. You can tell the difference in the size and it's rhizomes. Cannova Cannas are smaller in size (2-4ft) and rhizomes are alot smaller and different aswell. The Giant Musifolia Cannas are similar aswell. Although it's sheer size should give it away once mature. ( 8-10+ft with big thick stocks and rhizomes) This variety does well with watering each week with feeding Miracle-Gro twice a month. Goes good with with bright green foliage plants ( Elephant Ears, Cannas and potatoe vines) in beds, pots and patios. I would rate this variety 8/10. The foliage and medium size does it for me! The price is similar to the Indian Shot, but because of it's popularity I bet you could get it for free. I often give this variety out for free.

Indian Shot Cannas: This is such a classic and extremely common Canna Lily!! When people talk about Cannas, this is the first variety that comes to mind. These are considered tall cannas. The average size is 5-7ft tall, with maximum heights of 8 to 9 feet in optimum growing conditions. I've personally had two beautiful groups of this variety get close to or even pass10ft tall this past year. Largest I ever saw this variety get. They have big green leaves ( 2+ ft) and a beautiful red flower. Blooms July to November. This Canna's rhizomes are large and produced alot of eyes for future growth. It's not uncommon for one grade A rhizome to have 7 to 10+ eyes. Eyes on rhizomes are where a new plant will form and grow. That means you have 7 to 10 plants on one rhizome which each plant produces more rhizomes with more eyes on it. This is considered a " cold hardy variety " in zone 6B( South of Route 78/81 PA). You can leave these in the ground all year around south of the Ridge and Valley Providence. Just got to make sure they are close to a fondation that gets alot of winter sunshine ( South, West, East facing side) I personally found out that this variety does well in full sunlight with water spouts emptying rain water near by. This variety loves heat, watering and food. Plant in late April or early May 4 to 6 inches deep in organic rich soil. Sunny locations are ideal. Can stay in the ground all year around. I would rate this variety 8/10. It's a great starter and does well next to patios and decks. Prices range from $5-$15 for rhizome. But since this is such a common variety, I bet you could get it for free somewhere. I give this variety out for free.
