Something can be beautiful and still be wrong for the room.

This chandelier isn’t necessarily too small. This table isn’t too large. But together, the proportions don’t quite work.

That’s scale.

Scale is the relationship between an object and the space and other objects around it. A fixture that feels substantial in a showroom can suddenly disappear over a large dining room table. A beautiful chair can overwhelm a delicate desk. Even artwork can feel “off” when its scale doesn’t relate to the wall or furniture beneath it.

In my dining room, the 72 inch round table carries a lot of visual weight. The chandelier above it simply doesn’t carry enough.

And that’s an important distinction: the problem isn’t always the object. Sometimes it’s the relationship.

I’m changing this room piece by piece, and correcting the scale of the lighting is one of them.

Some people see an old sink. I see the beginning of a room.

I found this vintage wall-hung sink for $150, and admittedly, she’s seen better days.

One missing handle.
Decades of grime and oxidation.
A little rust.
A beautifully patinated scalloped soap dish.
And plumbing that looks like it has stories to tell. 😂

But look at those curves. That high backsplash. The separate hot and cold taps. That little soap dish!

This is exactly why I love designing with vintage pieces. I’m not looking for something perfect, or something I can order today and have on my porch tomorrow. I’m looking for character.

This sink came out of a historic property in Seguin that once operated as a hospital/sanitarium in the early 1900s. And now, more than a century later, she’s getting another chapter.
I already have a plan for her.

And no, she will not look like this when I’m finished. 😏

A room doesn’t need matching pieces to feel connected.

Look closely and you’ll see the same ideas quietly appearing again and again. Curved forms, warm color, creamy upholstery, and traditional details.

Nothing is identical.
But everything is speaking the same language.

That’s repetition at work.

It creates rhythm without making a room feel overly coordinated, and gives collected interiors the freedom to evolve over time.

Repeat the idea, not the object.

Some of the best pieces in a home don’t begin with a plan.

Years ago, a neighbor was having a yard sale, and I spotted this old iron bed.

$75

I brought it home, and it has followed me through different rooms, different homes, and more than a few versions of my decorating style.

I’ve changed the bedding. Changed the colors. Changed everything around it.

But not the bed.

Looking back through these old photos, I realized this piece says something about the way I’ve always approached my home, even before I had words for it.

A collected home isn’t created by buying everything at once. And it doesn’t require replacing everything when your style changes.

Sometimes it begins by simply recognizing a piece with character, bringing it home, and allowing it to evolve with you.

The rooms changed.
My style evolved.
The $75 old iron bed earned its place.

DESIGN PRINCIPLE | TENSION

Some of the most interesting rooms contain things that, on paper, shouldn’t quite go together. That is tension

Tension isn’t about making a room feel unsettled. It’s the deliberate use of opposites to keep a space from becoming predictable.

Look at the second photo, my own powder room, still very much a work in progress.

The ornate mirror doesn’t “match” the simple pedestal sink. The room isn’t asking every element to be equally decorative. And that’s the point.

A room becomes more interesting when we allow different periods, finishes, shapes and personalities to live together.

The goal isn’t matching. It’s belonging

Bold + Refined. Ornate + Simple. Old Soul + Modern Form. Classic + Unexpected.

So the next time you are deciding whether something works in a room, try asking a different question:
Does it match? ❌
Does it belong? ✅

Some pieces just have a presence.

I found this beautiful vintage mirror for $50, and the moment I saw its aged brass finish and delicate architectural details, I knew it belonged in my dining room.

It has a few signs of age, but that’s part of what makes it special. Older materials have a soul. They bring character, history, and a sense that a room has been collected over time rather than purchased all at once.

Now that it’s hanging, it reflects light across the room and makes the entire wall feel larger. Proof that a beautiful home doesn’t require a huge budget, just patience, a little vision, and the willingness to recognize a treasure when you find one.

Character can’t be rushed.

The most memorable homes aren’t always the newest or the most expensive. They’re the ones that have been shaped over time.

Natural stone, weathered wood, and soft touches of greenery create a sense of warmth that never goes out of style.

To me, the most beautiful homes feel collected rather than decorated. They tell a story long before you ever step inside.
