One thing people don’t always realize about refinishing furniture is that the transformation doesn’t happen in a day. A beautiful, lasting finish takes time, patience, and a lot of careful steps.

First comes stripping the old finish, which can take several rounds depending on what was previously used. Then the wood has to be cleaned, sanded, and allowed to dry properly before moving forward. After that, I condition the wood so the stain absorbs more evenly and doesn’t turn out blotchy. Once the stain goes on, it needs time to fully dry before any protective finish can be added.

Then come the top coats. Most pieces need several coats for durability, and each coat has to dry before the next one can be applied. In between coats, there may also be light sanding to keep everything smooth and professional-looking.

So when a refinishing project takes several weeks — sometimes longer — it’s because every layer matters. Rushing the process can affect the final look and durability. The goal is not just to make the piece look good today, but to give it a finish that will hold up and be loved for years to come.
