Contractors!! I know you aren't working on oil furnaces but if you know of any that have been removed that are still functional could you let me know? I have a customer that needs one for a shop.

One might presume from all the sharing that I am doing of Poynter Heating and Cooling that I am no longer working. That is not right. Josh Poynter is my grandson whom I love very much but that doesn't mean you should call him instead of me. However, if you can't get me then he is an excellent choice.

I was called on this one due to reduced airflow on one of the systems. I immediately noticed that the air filter was indicating that the fan coil was pulling pretty hard. When I removed the filter the air flow increased by a lot. I went ahead and checked the coils, refrigerant charge, amperage draw on the motors. After correcting the airflow problem these systems were okay. Regular maintenance reveals issues that may not yet be a problem. Perhaps you won't have that outage on July 4th with a house full of guests.

This is a Luxaire Air Conditioner that I installed a few years ago. This owner is a stickler for maintenance and I visit her twice a year. When I installed it she asked if she should change out her oil furnace. It is also a Luxaire but is very close to 50 years old and is in perfect condition so we left the furnace. Regular maintenance works.

MY HEAT PUMP WON'T SHUT OFF!! A common complaint when the temperature dips into the low 20s or maybe even a bit higher. This is caused by the design of heat pumps as a 2-stage system. The first stage is the heat pump. When the temperature outside is too low for the heat pump alone to satisfy the thermostat it then engages the secondary heat source which is usually electric resistance heat. Once the temperature rises to about 2 degrees from the thermostic set point the resistance heat drops out and allows the heat pump to operate alone. Sometimes this results in the never shutting off as it cycles between these two stages. This is why it is important that you have your heat pump checked yearly to see that all systems are operating at peak efficiency. A small deficiency in refrigerant charge can drastically affect performance and cost and you may not be able to tell the difference. Dirty or obstructed coils can do the same thing. You may think it unnecessary but a yearly service can save substantial amounts of money in energy used.

Well, here it is the middle of September which means it is likely that we will get a frost within the next month or so. Nighttime temperatures will be sinking into the 40s and a little heat might be welcome in the morning just to knock the chill off. It is time to give your heating system a whirl to make sure it will answer when you call.

I recommend a service call just to check up on things. Just a slight lack of proper refrigerant charge can affect your energy bill quite a bit. Dirty coils can ruin the efficiency of an HVAC system. If you keep pets in the house you can just about bet you have a dirty filter or coil no matter how clean you keep your house.

For appliances that use fossil fuels there are several things that need to be attended to. Oil burning furnaces are great at making heat but they have parts that should be changed each year along with examinations of the heat exchanger and motors.

The nature of the beasts is that they will get you to the coldest night of the season and then quit. That makes sense because that is when they are under the most load. I am one of the last people around that understands oil furnaces and knows how to properly work on them.

If you require service, give me a call. Juanita will appreciate it.

Working over in the K***s near Hustonville. The K***s are a favorite area of the state for me. They encircle the Bluegrass. This area here has a lot of flat land but near Richmond and out the Mountain Parkway they are much closer together.

Had a chance to service one of these things today. I still have a few remaining. Many of the homes in Somerset were equipped with these systems but were removed when people wanted to add air conditioning. I have always advised people to keep them and just put in AC. If you have one you are aware that the comfort level in the home is far superior to forced air systems. I have one in my house along with my heat pump. When the outdoor temperature drops into the 20s we fire up the boiler and we hate to go back to the heat pump.

These were taken on a trip to put a Combustioneer room heater back together after they had bought all new parts but didn't know how to hook them up. These are from the Faubush/Pottershop Road area.
