It's always a pleasure and very satisfying when a client asks "what's this part or this side of the project going to look like?" and I get to show them.

We always address those questions during the design process, well before permits are pulled and construction starts; but it's not uncommon for the request to pop back up a week before framing starts as clients' excitement, anticipation, and anxiety about their choices start to bubble to the top.

One of the more satisfying parts of any project is when a project starts to come to fruition after months of reassuring a client that the final product they are getting for their home renovation, addition, or new build is exactly what we planned.

Better late than never since this project is already weather tight, but the progress pics on a renovation like this circa 1726 home on Main Street in Norwell, MA are as interesting as the final product. The home has seen some things: additions, cosmetic 'lifts', and lots of families growing and move on. The current family is also growing, but aren't ready to move out and don't want to disturb what's left of the original charm. The original street facade will stay in tact and the original, exposed beams have been preserved and will be reapplied after the structure has been reinforced. And check out that fire place! has been phenomenal navigating all the 'fun' surprises we encounter the further we dig into history.

This home overlooking the harbor in Scituate, MA has been in the family for 50 years, a summer retreat spanning generations. The current generation decided to make it their permanent home and didn't need to add much, but needed a little more and needed it on the first floor. We expanded the kitchen, added a three seasons room off the dining room, and added a little more space to the existing first floor bedroom for a primary suite and laundry. There was some fun geometry, roof lines, and framing to work through on this one in order to add the needed space on the first floor and preserve the second floor spaces and windows.

Before photo and current status on our Hingham, Ma project. The original house was designed by renowned architect Hugh Stubbins, of KlingStubbins, with much of the original design and finishes still in tact. A late 80's/early 90's addition/renovation added the screened in porch with the roof above and the living room space to the left of the screened in porch in the before photo. The new design expands the living room by enclosing and connecting the screened in porch, while adding a new water proofed porch below the reconstructed deck. Those windows are a dream

Originally designed by Hugh Stubbins and featured in Progressive Architecture in 1950, the clients' desire for this project was to increase the living area of the home without disturbing the character of the original design. The clients did not want to lose their screened in porch or deck in the process either. The solution was to infill the screened porch with glass to match the adjacent large-scale windows and move the screened-in porch below the reconstructed deck. All the original large windows are to be replaced, conserving the style but enhancing their thermal performance.
Construction is kicking off soon! Photos show existing and proposed, exterior and interior.
