Architects Judith Sheine and Norman Millar have completed a new residence at Sea Ranch, California — a half-century old seaside “enclave of rugged modernist houses” designed to capture the spirit of their surroundings. Read more below.

“Thanks to two architects—and the mutual friend that connected them—this home found its perfect place within a community next to the sea. Fifty years ago, a group of young architects began planning a cluster of contemporary houses on a rugged strip of coastline north of San Francisco. The goal was to turn a ten-mile expanse of bluffs and beaches into a community where rustic second homes would blend in with the landscape. That community is now known as the famed Sea Ranch, which has become a destination for many an architectural pilgrim attracted by the pastoral modernism of its early buildings. Years later, it’s still thriving and gains 30 or so houses each year. According to Don Lyndon—one of the original Sea Ranch architects—this recently built home is “a real continuation of what we were trying to do.” For the design, homeowner Gabriel Ramirez kept in line with the commitment to community, requesting the help of two of his friends, architects Judith Sheine and Norman Millar. “We’re like a family,” says Millar, who adds that Ramirez made it clear that the architects would always be welcome in their creation.”

Read the story of a couple’s 1960s boathouse, which was recently revamped by .

“A few years back, a couple acquired a piece of land 65 miles northwest of Seattle, where they had been going on weekends and summers since 2005. They already had a tree house and other places to sleep and cook, but the new lot had rare access to the waterfront—and the island can only be reached by seaplane or ferries from Anacortes. Before they could relish the views, though, something had to be done about the existing structure, which had been hand built by the previous owner in the 1960s and balanced on an assemblage of creosote-soaked logs and tires. The couple wanted to build a new boathouse that would not only supply comfortable seaside accommodations, but that would also restore the site’s natural ecology. So, they turned to Dan Wickline of . ,So much of the project is about the site and the interaction between the structure and the shoreline,’ says the client. Wickline went on to design a new boathouse—with a specifically Pacific Northwest modern flair—that now stands on narrow columns, allowing daylight, eelgrass, and kelp to return to the shoreline. ‘We reduced the amount of in-water structure by 98 or 99 percent,’ says Wickline. ‘The boathouse is so much about being out there on the edge of the shore, and hearing the sounds, and feeling the breezes.’ Now, the residents can open up the windows and connect with the (other) animals inhabiting the terrain—including at least one bald eagle.”

Guangzhou-based studio O-office Architects has placed a sweeping, bright white chapel on a beachfront in southern China to serve as a "spiritual and figurative anchor" on the coastline.

Located in the city of Shanwei, the Seaside Chapel of Jinting Bay takes the shape of a swooping structure that is oriented toward the sea.

Informed by the bay’s coastline and “the Matsu culture of this region”, the chapel is triangular in plan, and comprises a wide linear axis at the entrance and a tall vertical axis facing the beachfront.

A secluded micro cabin in the Brazilian forest by Silvia Acar. Built with materials carried by hand to the site, Silvia’s vision “was for a nature retreat that had the feel and scent of the woodlands around it.”

“The cabin is located in a wooded area far from any access roads, and therefore had to be built using materials easily moved without heavy machinery that would otherwise damage the land. Wrapped in Paricá plywood, it’s just about the perfect place for sleeping, cooking, and reconnecting with nature.

Yuandang bridge by .arch.urbanists. Built to provide spaces for play, rest and growing plants, the bridge connects two areas of wetland across Shanghai’s Yuandang lake.

“The China and Australia-based firm designed the 586-metre beam bridge for cyclists and pedestrians as a ‘hybrid structure’, blending architecture, infrastructure and landscape with existing pathways and nature on the site.

“Strips of lighting on the base of the bridge’s walkway create a glowing effect on the lake at night, while a large canopy of hammered metal creates a ‘pavilion playground’ at the structure’s midpoint.”

A revamped 1965 home by interiors firm .

“The journey, however, wasn’t as glamorous as it looks. At some point during its life, the home gained a bulky addition that left a puzzling floor plan.

‘There was a lot of square footage, but it was cut up into a lot of small rooms,’ says Patrick Maziarski, the lead designer who worked on the project with the firm’s principal, Kirsten Blazek.

“The choppy floor plan stood at odds with the midcentury elements of the architecture, dulling its grandeur. ‘It was just about streamlining what was happening,’ says Maziarski. ‘Connecting the spaces in a thoughtful way, and adding back that architectural integrity.’ Take a peek at those before photos, and you’ll see just how much work there was to be done. From peeling back worn finishes, to sandblasting ceilings, to adding new flagstone flooring and reorienting the home’s circulation, the team was able to reveal the fundamental beauty of the home. ‘There was a really deliberate intention to marry some traditional midcentury elements with more contemporary features,’ says Maziarski. And clearly, that intention paid off.

The Shenzhen Rural Commercial Bank headquarters by is now officially open. The 158-meter-talk jewel is a naturally ventilated steel-wrapped office building with an exterior that resembles an exoskeleton.

“Located on the edge of a public park in one of Shenzhen's business districts, the 33-storey tower is distinguished by its external steel diagrid, which is both a structural and solar-shading element.

“It reduces solar heat gain by an estimated 34 per cent, according to the studio.”

Brejos da Carregueira House by - a vacation home on the west coast of Portugal, crafted for two families seeking respite from urban living.

“Based on the idea that the families would frequently be preparing meals for nearby beach trips or while lounging around the pool, the architects designed the 2,371-square-foot getaway to break down the barriers between indoor and outdoor spaces. By employing large, sliding glass doors along the kitchen and living room at the rear of the home, the residents are now able to enjoy a seamless experience throughout each space.

‘We sought to develop a house with its own identity, both outside and inside,’ say the architects

‘Furthermore, it can bring together two distinct languages, one inside—more traditional—and one outside—more modern—with the best qualities of both.’”
