Here are the most common waterproofing mistakes we see on jobs that fail:
❌ No proper waterproof system
Tile and grout are not waterproof.
Without a real system (membrane, sealed seams), water goes straight into the walls and floor.
❌ Improper shower pan build
Wrong slope or poor liner installation = water sits and slowly leaks.
This leads to rot, mold, and bad smell over time.
❌ Unsealed joints and corners
Corners, niches, and seams are the weakest points.
If they’re not sealed correctly, water will find its way in — every time.
❌ Mixing incompatible materials
Different systems (random boards, membranes, adhesives) used together without following specs = failure.
Everything must work as one system.
❌ Fast work, no cure time
Rushing waterproofing layers or tile installation doesn’t allow proper bonding.
Looks good at first… fails later.
❌ No flood test
Skipping water testing means you’re gambling with the entire bathroom.
A proper test catches leaks before tile is installed.
⚠️ The result?
Mold behind walls
Soft / rotten framing
Loose tile
Expensive tear-outs
✔️ Done right = no problems
A properly waterproofed shower is something you never think about again — and that’s exactly the goal.
