Enjoying the storm, but wishing for the gardening season to start soon!

We’re expecting fairly unprecedented storm weather this evening across the sound. What does that mean for your fledgeling spring garden? Take a look below for a few quick tips and tricks to keep things safe over the long stormy night. 🌬️ πŸͺ β›ˆοΈ

1. Wait to plant seedlings! Planting out any delicate babies today puts them at risk of getting thrashed tonight, especially if the hail is more than we’re used to, or the wind is especially destructive in your area.

2. If you’ve already planted, cover your seedlings with weighted nursery pots. A rock on top does the trick to keep them in place. A Sky staffer made little triangles with bamboo, and covered them with plastic and frost cover, weighted with stones.

3. If you have tall plants in the ground or in pots, consider securing them to a fence. Make sure other outdoor items that could crash into the garden are put away or secured. (For a lot of us, it’s garbage cans or large wind spinners we have to watch out for).

4. Don’t fret! Ultimately, most of the larger plants in your garden will tolerate stormy weather just fine, and if there is damage, it’s not the end! Part of the beauty of nature is its profound ability to grow once more, and in more interesting ways, after being damaged. Once it starts, enjoy the storm with your loved ones and focus on your safety and comfort. With a little prep, your garden will be there for you when you wake up!
