Feeling like a proud plant momma! First season of this little gem in my garden, and it’s flowering in mid autumn, right on cue. Hemiboea subaequalis var. jiangxiensis, or as I call it — Lil’ Miss Unpronounceable. As for the holes in the leaves, well, shows it’s part of the ecosystem.
Thank you for this find.

I recently met a real plantswoman for a consult! She had hybridized these sunflowers in her yard to show petals in this amazing burnt orange/red colour. Your landscape designer is impressed. 🔥🔥🔥

Joanna and I went forest bathing in , which is revealing new secrets every time I’m here. Like this intricate “Snakes and Ladders” arbor.

No rust for the wicked! 💪
Thank you for working together with me on my very own, very much needed, garden renovation. Do designers make good clients…? 🤷🏻‍♀️

First contact with new patio! Some of you know that your landscape designer’s husband has been ill since last year. We made lots of changes to the house in the last twelve months, and finally it was time for the backyard. After all, what use is a garden if you can’t sit and walk safely in it? We now have a beautiful, trip-hazard free new patio, walker-enabled path and sturdy handrail that hubby can easily navigate.

📸 For details of all the work and installation, head over to , our installers, who did a great job. Thanks Trevor and crew!

New garden center?! Of course I had to check it out. A fancy fern caught my eye, pteris cretica, jurassic velociraptor ribbon fern, so I bought one, brought it home and… divided it. Wish me luck.🤞

Had a good talk with Matt, thanks for your time, and hope you all will be thriving! 💚💚💚

From my latest Quickstart garden consultation: Peggy‘s favorite style is the Cottage Garden, which works beautifully with her house and sunny yard. We looked at options to weave the Cottage theme through the various outdoor areas — finding plants to complement existing ones, looking to move some into more suitable spots (playing “plant chess”😁) instead of throwing them out. Relocating plants when they outgrow their existing space or aren’t thriving is a great way to save money and keep a plant you love. Sometimes a couple of feet 👣 can make all the difference.

As Peggy loves roses, and has quite a few, we talked about classic, contemporary and unusual combinations.

This is Olivia, my Quickstart client today. We talked about planting up her front yard with plants that are in proportion with her house (i.e. not too large), a suitable spot for her two lonely viburnums, and plant ideas to make her garden block wall look less imposing.

Their backyard is full of potential, too, and slopes towards the house, a common challenge in Seattle. We looked at grading solutions, an overreaching holly from next door and what to do about it, and last but not least, a replacement for this hydrangea, one that can be trained on a trellis.

Spring is here and so are garden ideas and motivation. Happy gardening!

Here’s a thing I learned from Piet Oudolf in a masterclass: if you got the texture mix of your plant composition right, it will look good in b/w. Since you’re not just relying on colour. So sometimes I put the b/w filter on my photos as a check up.
What do you think — did I do a good job?

Tree mythology. My husband’s occupational therapist admired our huge mountain ash which she said reminded her of the stories her Scottish mother used to tell her. In Scottish-
Celtic mythology, a rowan tree is to protect the house and its inhabitants from evil spirits. Therefore you would often find it in people’s front gardens or near the house.
Our mountain ash certainly attracts all the birds. It’s quite the magnet. In terms of protecting us — I think our rowan tree needs to do a better job!
Take good care of your mountain ash. Those Celtic spirits are not to be messed with 💚

To me, gardens are nature brought to a human scale. And because people take center stage in my designs, they also take center stage in my garden photography. Here are a few of my favourites over the years 😍
Thanks to all my friends and clients who were posing proudly for me in their gardens. (Except pic #2, which was taken in , but too beautiful to leave out)
