Why is Juneteenth significant?
It marks the end of slavery in the United States.
Even though the Emancipation Proclamation was signed by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863, African Americans in Texas were not informed of their freedom for another 2½ years, on June 19, 1865.
Juneteenth is a reminder of the strength, resilience, and enduring spirit of Black communities, and it's also a time to reflect on Black history, celebrate Black culture, and continue to fight for equality and justice.
