Yesterday someone close to me was told they have cancer. Again. I am having a hard time processing this, so I went to my shop and took it out on some wood.

For those of you who do not use a lathe on a regular basis, the process of making a bowl is multiple steps. First you select wood, and cut it to a shape that can be used. Then you find a center point and put the wood in the lathe. You spin it fast, and start removing wood. At some point, you make a shape that can be held by a "Chuck", which is a specially made tool for holding on to wood by a small circle (a tenon, or mortice).

If all goes according to plan, the outside of the bowl is largely finished by this point. then you start to take the wood out of the middle of the bowl. One of my bowls today... well it didn't make it. You can see the shine of the applied polish, while the inside of the bowl is clunky and rough.

As this bowl exploded in front of me, I was struck at the analogy. I life, this complex process of becoming the person you want to, shattered by this thing over which you feel no control.

As you can see, I also formed a bowl that did not explode. I will give it to my wife to hold those little plastic tabs that hold a bread bag together. A small piece of control and beauty on an otherwise pessimistic day.

There is no moral here, just me trying to process.
