Land Morphology

Land Morphology Land Morphology is a Seattle-based landscape architecture practice focused on creating rich, emotive

Founded by Richard Hartlage, Land Morphology is comprised of a talented interdisciplinary team of landscape architects, designers, urban planners, and horticulturists, who create highly varied spaces that integrate exquisite built form, sophisticated horticulture, and the fine arts. Each space is uniquely memorable, vibrant, carefully crafted, and environmentally sustainable. Land Morphology offer

s deep experience in designing landscapes of multiple types and scales: from customized site furnishings, like the Seibert and Rice "Birds and Bees" terracotta pots, to large, public gardens such as the Chihuly Garden and Glass and Herb and Vegetable Garden at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden. We believe that great landforms are a process to be nurtured and developed, not static spaces where design ends the day installation is complete. With vast training, knowledge, and commitment to horticulture and management, we continue to shape and cultivate each place as it matures and evolves.

Castle Gardens is a multifaceted, multi-purpose new garden at Yew Dell Botanical Gardens, transforming a once utilitarian landscape into a vibrant destination for visitors, members, and the broader community. The project replaces an aging swimming pool, asphalt driveway, and parking area that once served the former residence—now the garden’s administrative offices—with a cohesive, accessible, and richly planted garden environment.

A series of entry arbors greet all guests to Land Morphology's founding partner Richard Hartlage's home and garden. The tallest arbor honors the beloved schnauzer trio of Pluto, Jupiter, and Nova, and does not forget the late Astro. Diamond plate steps lead to the porch and green front door. Plants adorn each step.

Our double award-winning Shore Blocks project features a new beach – a carefully regraded shoreline with sustainable slope and gravel beach bordered by native plantings that support aquatic life.

The modern cove restoration project creatively utilizes Valdes sandstone blocks from British Columbia as a unique approach to shore armoring. The block forms are seamlessly reflected in the garden's paving patterns and the home's architectural features, establishing a cohesive and harmonious design throughout the linear garden.

Winner of Pacific NW regional award of residential excellence in design from Luxe Magazine and a Merit Award from the Washington Chapter American Society of Landscape Architects (WASLA)

"IT’S SPRING, WHICH means it’s time for the next installment of Seattle Grows, a seasonal garden party game (that I made up). This year I’m reaching out to local garden pros, asking them to recommend plants that deserve a place in our Pacific Northwest gardens."
