Prentiss Balance Wickline Architects

Prentiss Balance Wickline Architects Seattle and Eastern Washington based architecture firm specializing in northwest modern architecture throughout the country.

We design with the belief that nothing is impossible, and temper it with good old-fashioned pragmatism, embracing both big ideas and intricate details. Taking into account location, context, and other inherent attributes of a specific project, we strive to create a balanced whole, integrating the structure and the environment. We consider the interplay between inside and outside, light and shadow,

aesthetics and utility, carefully selecting materials that harmonize with nature, prioritizing efficiency and sustainability. Most importantly, we look for opportunities to bring joy and unanticipated delight into the spaces we create as well as into the process that gets us there. This should be fun— after all, we are building dreams.

Located on a remote island on the Straight of Georgia at the mouth of Desolation Sound, the site is formed of natural granite bedrock and contains a dramatic peninsula and cliff which serve as a windbreak for Cortes Bay as well as the Seattle and Vancouver yacht clubs.

The Copper Harbor house is perched on the shore of Lake Superior, nestled in a forested lot on the edge of the Upper Peninsula of Lake Michigan. Built to withstand the harshest conditions, this house is a place to shelter from snow and wind: a private refuge built to experience the natural beauties of the site.

Perched above Port Gamble Bay, this residence is shaped by expansive water and mountain views. Warm wood interiors, generous glazing, and a series of connected volumes create a home that feels both grounded in the landscape and open to the horizon beyond.

The site is a very steep site on the west side of the island, almost solid rock—the only flat or semi flat space is used for access, parking and an existing structure. Given these constraints we explored further up the hill and found a shelf that we could use.

Located in a historic town in the middle of Yosemite National Park, the Wawona House is a study in contrasts. While the compact, modern form of the building may stand out amongst the mosaic of the town's structures, the building's material palette is wholly of the landscape, allowing the house to feel at ease amongst its wooded environment and the rustic setting of a small town within a National Park.

Arriving at the Bramblewood House, a gravel road first takes one through a densely wooded forest of old growth fir and cedar. The topography of the site is variegated and steeply sloped, with areas of visible bedrock among clearings in the trees.

Located in the San Juan Islands, the Boathouse stands foremost as a threshold between water and land, an idea it embraces literally by providing upland access to those arriving by boat or seaplane, and figuratively through its location and form.

Tongass Ledge sits gently perched over the Alaskan shore. Overlooking inlet waters and balanced at the edge of a rock wall, two volumes at a subtle angle capture the breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. For a busy client who splits time between Seattle and Ketchikan, the complete design required a simple form and program, personalized through highly custom interiors.
