We are pleased to announce the publication of the Washington Recreational Boating Pumpout Facility Assessment! Together with the Washington State Parks & Recreation Commission, MAKERS assessed the statewide waste infrastructure that supports recreational boating and led engagement with statewide environmental agency, port, and boater program representatives. The final recommendations are intended to guide future investments in waste disposal infrastructure, boater education and outreach, and legislative engagement.

The MAKERS team completed site work at Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center (MCAGCC) Twentynine Palms for 292 Asset Evaluations (AEs). Facilities included buildings, structures, linear assets, and training ranges throughout Main Site and Camp Wilson.

We also visited 465 facilities at Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Iwakuni, Japan in support of FY2026 Asset Evaluation (AE) preparation. AEs provide updated facility utilization for upload to iNFADS and are a vital resource in any project or master planning effort.

As a reflection of the values of our staff and our company, MAKERS was proud to support a number of causes throughout 2025, including hunger relief, social justice, social service organizations, veterans, and scholarships for underrepresented students in architecture, planning, and engineering. Most recently, MAKERS made donations to the Community Foundation of Snohomish County, United Way of Skagit County, and Whatcom Community Foundation for flood relief in response to the recent catastrophic floods across the state.

During the government shutdown and the ensuing lapse in SNAP coverage, Seattle food banks are facing increased community need. Last week MAKERS donated the Rainier Valley Food Bank, which serves South Seattle and makes a great impact, with 91,000 visits in 2024. MAKERS recently completed a collaborative effort with South Sound Housing Affordability Partners (SSHA3P) to develop guidance materials and a model code for a group of Pierce County cities implementing HB 1998.

This law, passed by the state legislature in 2024 to increase the affordability and diversity of the housing supply, requires cities to allow “co-living” in all multifamily zones. A new term for a classic housing type, co-living consists of rented rooms sharing common kitchens and other amenities on site.

MAKERS worked closely with an advisory committee of planners from the SSHA3P working group cities to identify code sections in each city that would have to be updated to comply with HB 1998 as well as the types of guidance that would be most helpful for staff making the necessary.

MAKERS then developed a model code incorporating several basic optional provisions not required by the law to help ensure project quality. MAKERS also drafted a guidance document with individualized recommendations for each city, background information on code concepts, and considerations that city planners can use to tailor the updates. In addition, MAKERS used GIS to create customized maps for each jurisdiction identifying the zones where co-living must be allowed as well as the location of major transit stops where parking minimums don’t apply.

MAKERS is excited to share the launch of the Washington State Zoning Atlas! The Atlas is a first-of-its-kind tool to provide zoning data from across the state in one standardized, interactive platform. We are proud to have supported the Washington State Department of Commerce, with incredible teammates: BHC Consultants, University of Washington Seattle, University of Washington Tacoma, Western Washington University, and Eastern Washington University. It was an exciting challenge to set a method for standardizing zoning data across Washington state and facilitate multi-university cross collaboration!
