This week, I’ve been teaching my latest class, “Exploring Plasma & Neon in Kiln-Formed Glass,” with .percy at the Corning Museum of Glass Studio.
We are working with an area of plasma design and glass sculpture that is rarely explored: making flat plasma panels from fused glass.
Students have learned basic principles of plasma and new skills and tools to explore flat panel design.
First, we designed and assembled the glass envelope, using fiber models to shape the glass. Then, the glass parts were sealed in the kiln.
We’ve been sharing insights on the effects of gas pressure, use of phosphors for color, choosing power supplies, and problem-solving.
The first photo is our students’ work in the kiln, and the last slide is a students’ finished project!
The last few years, I’ve been learning the art of neon. I love adding unexpected and unique elements into my custom kiln-formed work.
Teaching classes at Corning is such a joy and I am always inspired by my students’ creative ideas.
