Early Morning at a UW Tacoma Flooring Project

We showed up at 6 o’clock in the morning ready to start a full flooring turnover inside the UW Tacoma dorms.

The plan was to demo the existing flooring, prepare the subfloors, and install all new flooring. The only problem? We were there before anyone was available to let us in.

That is part of commercial flooring. Sometimes the installation is the easy part. Access, scheduling, communication, and coordinating with the superintendent or building contact can determine how smoothly the entire

Why Tack Strip Removal Can Damage the Subfloor

This carpet is stretched over tack strips, and because the new flooring system does not use them, they have to come out.

The challenge is what is underneath.

In this case, the subfloor appears to be gypsum, which is a lightweight concrete material that can chip and break when nails are removed. That means demolition has to be done carefully, and any damaged areas may need to be repaired before the new flooring goes down.

Flooring installation is not just about putting in the new material. Proper demolition and subfloor preparation are a huge part of making sure the finished floor performs correctly.

Real Value Is in Managing the Entire Project

One thing I’ve learned is that commercial flooring is much more than installing the material.

A huge part of the value comes from managing the logistics of the entire job. Where are the materials going? How are we getting tools to the crew? Who is the point of contact on site? Is everyone working in the right area at the right time?

Communication, scheduling, material staging, crew management, and problem solving all play a role in keeping a project moving smoothly.

Project management experience is extremely valuable because even the best flooring installers need the right plan behind them to get the job done efficiently.

Work Hard, But Protect Your Body Too

When I was younger, I used to wear the aches and pains from hard work like a badge of honor.

Now I look at it differently.

Flooring is physical work, and if you plan on doing it for years, you have to take care of your body. Use the right tools, wear the right gear, and work smarter when you can.

At the same time, every job teaches you something. Even something as simple as removing old wall base can change depending on what it is glued to and how strongly it bonded.

Experience helps you recognize those details and adjust as you go.

Why Floor Prep Depends on the Flooring Going Down

On this project, all of the existing vinyl has to be removed before we prep the floor for the new installation.

Different flooring types have different prep requirements. Carpet is much more forgiving because small imperfections underneath are less likely to show through the finished surface.

With vinyl and other resilient flooring, floor prep becomes much more important because bumps, holes, and uneven areas can transfer through the material.

At Frontline Flooring, we prepare the subfloor based on the flooring being installed so the finished result looks right and performs the way it should.

Back to my roots today. Stretching rug is where it started for us. Do you agree or disagree? Is carpet still king!?!?!

Commercial Flooring Is a Logistics Game Too

On this project, we had work happening on the second, third, and fifth floors.

That means the job is not just about installing flooring. We also have to figure out how to move tools, stage materials, use the service elevator, and keep the crew working efficiently without wasting time going back and forth.

Good logistics can make or break a commercial flooring project.

At Frontline Flooring, we plan the workflow so the team has what they need, where they need it, and the project can keep moving.

When You Show Up Before Everyone Else

Six o’clock in the morning, ready to work, and nobody is answering the phone.

Sometimes that is just part of working commercial flooring projects. Access, scheduling, superintendents, and job site coordination can all affect how quickly the day gets started.

Most of the time, we are working with a general contractor or superintendent who is already on site and ready to get us moving.

Commercial flooring installation is not only about installing the floor. Good communication and job site coordination matter too.
