The design of Lopez Lookout draws inspiration from the character of a modest island structure, featuring a simple gable roof and divided-lite windows. At the ground level, the architecture opens dramatically, minimizing enclosure and creating a stronger relationship between the home, the surrounding landscape, and the view beyond. The result is a space that intentionally blurs the line between indoors and outdoors.

A simple palette of ample daylight, limed washed walls, and stained cedar was used to create a space that could hold the creativity of two artists.

Shelf Notes - We asked a member of our team to choose a book from our office library and share what drew them to it.

This week’s selection: Álvaro Siza, Complete Works 1952 to 2012.

“Being able to study and experience some of Siza’s work in person has been memorable. There is a sensibility in the simplicity of his forms, in the way he works with light, and in how deeply he understands context. It is moving, simple, but incredibly powerful.”

Our Canal Street project is set along a shoreline greenbelt with canal views for days, this space is all about light, openness, and connection. A central atrium pulls three floors together, while bold steel frames rise from a concrete base, structure that doesn’t hide, it shows off. Warm wood tones soften the edges, framing uninterrupted views of the ship canal and bringing a sense of calm to the industrial vibe. A workplace that feels as good as it looks.

“Conceived as a minimalist retreat, the marching orders for this project were as follows: “when I arrive and sit my bags down, I want to feel as though I’ve stepped into a modern art gallery”. The design response strips the material palette down to black metal cladding, white stucco, carrara marble and gray concrete. The owners, both dedicated art collectors and creators, desired a flexible space easily reconfigured over time.” - Joe Herrin, AIA

Let’s start a conversation on your island, mountain or urban retreat.

“What do you like most about the construction process?”

We asked a member of our team, their answer:

“I like watching lines on paper pop into the world of light and material. Ideas suddenly have mass.”

Something new is taking shape, and we can’t wait to share it with you 😉
