Visiting East Bay, I was curious about what had become of the former nursery Annie’s Annuals. I knew it was under new ownership as former employees had taken it over and re-opened it as Curious Flora Nursery . No longer was the busy parking lot, the grand exuberance of annual display beds and what almost felt like a city block party with many people happily shopping, browsing and interacting with one another.

But what remains are glimpses of the former greatness and raw potential of a new chapter. The plant selection is still quite diverse: old favorites, nice emphasis on California natives and a few larger specimens of choice staples ready for instant impact.

I couldn’t help but reminisce about the fond memories I have of Annie’s and a few plants that reminded me of previous visits and wonderfully kind people like the late David Feix who has a Abutilon named after him and the very first plant I ever bought at Annie’s, the richly scented, double-flowered true Mexican mock orange.

I introduced myself to one of the owners, Colleen Wheeler, and offered my thanks for continuing on this very challenging venture. I’m excited to see Curious Flora thrive and blossom into a Bay Area garden destination to be enjoyed by everyone once again!

Do pay them a visit!

Cut fresh from the garden, scrumptious roses from Heirloom are blooming and I thought I’d put together a hand-tied bouquet for someone special .

Always feels like I’m taking work wherever I go. It’s a bad habit, I know.

This time work is sending me to for their annual conference in San Francisco. I flew in early to spend some time with family in East Bay and visited a fellow floral designer’s garden and a former well-known nursery that’s under new ownership. It’ll be a very busy week ahead and I’m hoping things back in WA are going well. Thanks to friends who are watering for me back home

No critiques, no questioning of ulterior motives, no concerns about losing money or wasting product, just a kind and heartfelt gesture from one flower lover to another. I personally overthink when I am gifting, a plant or flower to another person in the industry constantly worried about what they would think.

Just feeling the love from following a very busy day both in the garden, the “classroom” and in the kitchen.

Thanks for your healing, herbal bouquet and your help in the kitchen as well, Alicia!

So close to my brother’s house and just minutes north of SeaTac International Airport is a small botanical garden that’s one of the area’s hidden gems. The was looking really nice during a visit with family this weekend and I was impressed with the maintenance and care of the spaces. The iris and daylily and rose society were represented and the community garden plots were fun to explore.

Tulip season is wrapping up and I just have to share a tidbit of my visit with renowned bulb breeder, Eric Breed and, of course, the world-famous !

So many more photos and stories to share. Would you attend a lecture about my trip to Holland to see and learn more?

One of those flowers that seem to always be in bloom right around Mother’s Day is Lily-of-the-Valley. It’s a bit of a thug for most and it’s no different at work, which means I can forage for it and add it to bouquets or take just one or two stems to hang on to so I can enjoy its lovely scent! Also in bloom is a PNW native and one of my absolute forest favorites is the False Solomon’s Seal or Maianthemum racemosum. Again, considered a w**d at work, which means I “must get rid of it!”

I hope Moms out there had a wonderful day! Thank you for bringing us into this world.

Another incredible privilege during this whirlwind trip to Holland was visiting the private fields of Mr. Eric Breed. For many years, my colleagues have talked about him and his incredible work and he is certainly another legend in the flower bulb industry. He’s renowned for his Daffodil breeding, but his tulip collection (a future post!) is nothing short of remarkable as well. The daffs were just past peak, but there were treasures to see and admire and also smell! Mr. Breed also mentioned that will be importing a handful of his bulbs and those stakes marked with red are Jason’s selection to be exported this fall! Amazing!!!!!!

During my visit to Amsterdam, I found the Dutch version of GROW at and had to text as I also found the latest in the series called “WILD”!

My many thanks to for taking me to meet Eric! 🙏
