You would think that after staying at a lovely 3-story VRBO on a lake in Tennessee that I’d come back talking about the views, jumping from a fifteen-foot dock into the water, kayaking through the finger lakes, singing karaoke, and just generally enjoying time with friends. We recently stayed at this awesome place on Lake Norris, and it was so much fun. In fact, it was kind of wild. Kim and I coordinated almost 30 people from 11 families staying together for a few days. That level of logistics and organization is not for the faint of heart but still not what we all remember from this trip. It was for Scholastic Rowing Association’s National Championships, which our daughter Abby got to compete in. Again, you’d think that would be what my story was about or what we’d remember.

What truly wasn’t for the faint of heart was the driveway that led into this amazing house. Every driver in our group will remember it for a long time. We had families arriving at various times, some in the middle of the night, and as a precaution I sent them pictures, texts, various messages, warning of how steep this driveway was. I even met most of them at the top of it, just to make sure they didn’t drive down and get stuck...

There is a trail of unfinished projects behind me at home and at work that would circle the Nursery twice. A half-built table, plans scribbled on fragments of cardboard boxes, garden beds started with absolute confidence and abandoned somewhere between “visionary” and “What was I thinking?” For years I just thought that was part of my personality. Ambitious. Distracted. Constantly chasing the next exciting thing before the current thing had a chance to settle into place. Seemed normal to me. Honestly, I’m not sure what it would feel like to fully finish a project and just enjoy it without constantly pivoting to the next thing.

A second problem is that I don’t dream small. When we created raised beds at home, I could have done neat rectangles in straight lines. Instead, I envisioned a giant mandala some thirty feet across that had to span a change in elevation of about 4 feet. Full confession: two years later it isn’t 100% completed. I don’t dream small. I never have. Sometimes that creates magic. Sometimes it creates a pile of lumber and unfinished plans sitting in the Florida sun.

And somehow, right in the middle of all that chaos, The Flower Patch happened.…

Turn your backyard into a tropical oasis with Lobster Claw Heliconias! 🦞☀️

Here are 4 fun facts:

1. The red and yellow “claws” that emerge aren’t actually flowers, they’re modified leaves called bracts! Their flowers are hidden inside the claw shaped bract. Plants use these brightly colored bracts to draw in pollinators like hummingbirds and butterflies.

2. Their blooms can be used in flower arrangements. Add them to a bouquet for a tropical touch.

3. Despite looking similar to the Bird of Paradise, Heliconias are actually closer related to bananas.

4. Their blooms can last up to a month on the plant and 2-3 weeks if used in a bouquet.

Let us know what questions you have about Lobster Claw Heliconias 🦞🌿

Air plants are back in stock at the Nursery! They’re a great, low-maintenance option for anyone looking to add something unique into their space. 🌿✨

To water, we recommend a good soak in a bowl of water for about an hour, giving it a good shake, and then placing it upside down on a towel to drain excess water. Do this every one to two weeks.

Air plants are available in store for purchase. Be sure to let us know what questions you have about air plants! 🌱
