The Sequim Irrigation Festival dates back to 1896—making it one of the longest-running festivals in Washington State. What started as a celebration of bringing water to the dry plains of Sequim has grown into a tribute to the land, the people, and the creativity that thrives here today.

That same spirit of growth, change, and creativity lives on in our local artists.

This First Friday, we’re happy to be featuring Dave Montague at Sequim Spice and Tea—bringing the wildlife and beauty of the Olympic Peninsula to life through bold, nature-inspired art.

Chlorella
This green, single-celled, freshwater algae is a powerful antioxidant that helps protect the cellls and rid the body of free radicals. It contains all nine essential amino acids and is about 50 percent protein. It also contains vitamin B12, iron, vitamin-C, omega-3, and fiber.

Chlorella also supports the immune system, helps detoxify the body, and regulates hormones. When purchasing chlorella, powder form or supplements are best because the algae has a hard cell wall that is indigestible to humans.

Afternoon tea became popular in England in the early 1840s when Anna, the Duchess of Bedford, began taking tea with small snacks around 4 PM to bridge the long gap between lunch and a late evening dinner.

What started as a practical solution quickly turned into a daily social ritual among the English upper class.

Traditional afternoon tea included:

• Tea: usually black teas such as Assam, Darjeeling, or Earl Grey
• Served with: milk and sugar
• Food: cucumber sandwiches, scones with jam and clotted cream, and small cakes
• Presentation: a three-tier tray (sandwiches on the bottom, scones in the middle, pastries on top)

Tea was brewed in porcelain or bone china teapots and poured into matching cups and saucers, often with a milk jug and sugar bowl at the table.

In Victorian society, afternoon tea was also a social occasion, so guests typically dressed in formal daytime attire and gathered for conversation as much as the tea itself.

Today, afternoon tea is still served across Britain and around the world—though the dress code is usually optional.
