Around Again

Around Again Around Again is: " working to make waste a resource". Proceeds go for programs and supplies to reuse and up-cycle items.

We accept donated, still useable home furnishings and building material that are slated for landfill and sell it in our store. Our world faces many challenges to a sustained existence. It's a finite world with limited resources, yet humans act as though we are surrounded by unlimited resources. Many people are working to address issues affecting our planets though NGO's (Non Governmental Organizat

ions), legislation and treaties. On a local level, communities are coming together to help make things better. One person can make a difference and Around Again is there to help. In "The Story of Stuff' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9GorqroigqM Annie Leonard shows the path of stuff from cradle to grave. We know that a large percentage of the stuff that is thrown away still has value. By providing an opportunity to pass these items on we can interrupt this path and slow the harvesting of resources, production of toxic chemicals and Co2. Around Again has a running total of Co2 lowered in the atmosphere. We calculate that total based on sites that add up the Carbon used to make that product, Carry it through its life cycle. For instance the amount of Carbon it takes to make a kitchen cabinet is-22lbs. This does not calculate the amount of Carbon and other toxic chemicals that are used and released in the atmosphere when this item is thrown away. All our sales are assigned to departments and each department is assigned a base Co2 amount per item. We take the number of items that were sold in that department and times it by the amount of Co2 diverted for each item. Add all those department totals up and we get a very rough and low level of Co2 that we have kept out of our already heated atmosphere.

Hello everyone,
This is way overdue and I am so sorry about that.
Prices at Around Again, a hot topic for everyone.
I have gotten lots of feedback over the last three years about it. For those of you disappointed about the increase, I am truly sorry. This is your store and the mission is to keep stuff out of the landfill. If I could find a way to give it all away and keep the doors open I would, trust me. Money is not my motivation for this enterprise.

Over this time, I have had good straightforward conversations with folks and have come out of it with some understanding and a path forward.
I realize I have not done this in mass, so here I am.
Yes! prices were lower when we opened 14 years ago. As a business owner for the first years it is common to carry the business with your own money through the hard times. For the first 10 years that is what I did, dipping into savings to pay for salaries and fixed costs. At some point Around Again had to stand on its own financially. So around year 9 we started putting pricing stickers on items, a monumental task if ever there was one. During that time we did not raise any prices. After some trial and error and correcting we came up with a formula for survival. So after 11 years we had our first and ONLY price adjustment. Generally, we price items at 33% of retail (67% off if you like). That is what we need to do to keep the place going.
If the item is damaged or in rough shape we lower the price. If its been there for over a month we can start adjusting the price. If its brand new in the box the price is bit higher. But we do get it wrong sometimes and we encourage customers to look the item up for us see if we need to lower it.
This seems a fair approach to the problem in my book. Yes, items are donated for free and we love all the folks that bring in items. But running the store requires money, a fair amount of it actually and it takes a shared approach to keep it going.
I hope this helps and I look forward to seeing you at the store.
Sincerely,
Gavin Wuttken
