HOMEOWNERS: This is a brand new house, just built and painted. The new homeowner has not moved in yet. I took this photo while driving by on a sunny day. The next 5 houses have this same issue.
What you are seeing are lap marks in the paint. This happens when a painter does not keep a wet edge while working. A wet edge is when you work quickly enough to keep wet paint application the entire time across each board. If you keep a wet edge, the paint does not dry and you do not apply wet paint over dry paint creating a lap mark.
The best method is to paint 3-5 boards at a time and move your ladder across the home, keeping a wet edge across the entire house leaving no lap marks. If a painter is applying paint down the home and keeping their ladder in one place the paint on the top section will be dry by the time the painter gets to the bottom boards, and then moves their ladder over to the next section. The paint on the bottom boards will be dry by the time they get back to that area.
The quick, cheap painter (and in my opinion, lazy) is that for a reason, as shown in the photo. They work from their ladder in one spot and move down. A quality painter will move their ladder as many times as it takes across from left to right, or right to left, to keep a wet edge and have a smooth finish.
