One of the most difficult things fish pond leaks to discover is when you have a leak in the waterfall. This is something that can occur from time to time, and it is a lot harder to fix than when there is a leak in the walls or bottom of the pond. This does not mean it is impossible to find the leak. You will just have to go through a little more work to find it.

How to Get Started

The first thing you will need to do is to get a long piece of tubing you can connect to the water pump. This helps you to find fish pond leaks as they occur in the waterfall because you can stop the water from going all the way to the top of the waterfall and start it anywhere you want it to be.

One of the first places to start when looking for a leak in the waterfall is right where the water drops into the pond. This is a great place to look because it creates a break in between the rest of the waterfall and the pond and is a perfect candidate for a leak. Set the end of the temporary tube at this point and let it run for 24 hours after marking the water line.

If you return after 24 hours and the water level is the same, you need to keep working. If the fish pond leaks just as bad as ever, you have found your leak. Now, just spend some time locating the leak, or use Pond Pro 2000 to seal the connection and end the leak.

Moving up the Waterfall
As you move the tube, you will need to test each section for 24 hours. This will allow you to see if there is a change in the leak or if the leak stops altogether. If there has not been a leak in the water as you have been moving the tube up the waterfall, you have yet to find the leak. As soon as you do, simply use Pond Pro 2000 to seal the waterfall and fix the leak. This way, you can go on using the pond and your fish are safe throughout the winter.

What to Do If You Don’t Find a Leak
If you do not find a leak going all the way up the waterfall, but the leak resumes when you reconnect everything to the water pump, you may be experiencing fish pond leaks right at the very top of the waterfall. This can happen if roots are growing to the top or the soil has started to encroach on the inside of the pond. Take a good close look at what is going on and determine whether you will need to take more action than just applying an EPDM liner.
