Heath encompasses the genus erica that includes many different groups from summer to winter bloomers, for example: Erica tetralix, E. carnea, etc. True heathers are the Calluna vulgaris. Heaths and Heathers are very generic terms. Some heath labels say heather on them.

This is the Silfra Fissure area in Iceland. Hard to see but there are tufts of Calluna vulgaris or heather all over under the snow. All of the parts of Iceland I was in had heather plants along with Empetrum nigrum or crowberry. They were even growing in the ditches in the city of Reykjavík. They were very short most likely to stay under the snow.

If you are in the weather coming where your temps are dropping 20-30 degrees, you might consider covering your plants. Your heather is most likely not hardened off enough yet for this kind of sudden cold.

The hummers love the South African heaths. This is Erica mammosa. We put up the plastic today for frost, but they do not care. I put in a window just for them for daytime access. They flew around us like we were not there!
