The Penn State Extension Master Gardeners of Schuylkill County will host an informative seminar on cover crops—plants that can provide numerous benefits to your garden and soil during the winter months.

The presentation, “Cover Crops: Protecting and Improving Your Garden Through Winter,” will be led by Penn State Extension Master Gardeners Dawn and Greg Fisher. Attendees will learn how cover crops can help protect soil from erosion, improve soil health, suppress weeds, and prepare the garden for a successful growing season next year.

The seminar will be held on Saturday, September 12, at 10:00 a.m. at Cressona Agway, 22 North Second Street, Cressona, PA.

⚡ Nature's power is incredible.....and sometimes destructive.

One of our valued customers called us on Saturday after one of their trees was struck by lightning during the severe storms. The photos below show just how much damage a single lightning strike can cause. We safely removed the damaged tree today before it became a hazard.

Did you know?
🌳 Lightning strikes millions of trees each year in the United States. The intense electrical current instantly heats the moisture inside the tree, creating steam that can cause the bark to explode off the trunk and split the tree from the inside out. Even if a tree is still standing after a strike, hidden structural damage can make it unstable and dangerous.

If you have a tree that was damaged during the recent storms, don't assume it's safe just because it's still standing. Watch for split trunks, hanging limbs, or peeling bark, and have them evaluated before they become a risk to your family or property.

🌼🌿Great news! Plant native! 🌿🌼

Have you heard the good news? 🌼🐝
The Native Habitats at Commonwealth Facilities Act, House Bill 426, was passed through the PA House of Representatives with strong bipartisan support!

This bill would encourage any new construction of a garden, lawn, or green space at state facility to prioritize insecticide-free native plants and flowers. Across the Commonwealth, our state offices would demonstrate the importance of native plants in our landscape!

After passing through the House, HB 426 is now being considered in the PA Senate. If you’d like to see this bill enacted, please reach out to members of the PA Senate Environmental Resources & Energy Committee, and your own representatives to let them know you support native plant landscaping!

🌳 TREE BARK IDENTIFICATION GUIDE 🌳
Tree bark is one of the easiest ways to identify trees year-round—even when leaves are gone. Here are a few common bark patterns to look for:

1️⃣ Oak
Thick, rough bark with deep vertical ridges that give it a rugged, durable appearance.

2️⃣ Birch
Smooth, light-colored bark that peels in thin layers. Its papery texture makes it one of the easiest trees to recognize.

3️⃣ Pine
Reddish-brown bark with scaly or flaky plates that often appear cracked and layered.

4️⃣ Maple
Light gray and relatively smooth when young, gradually developing shallow ridges and furrows as the tree matures.

5️⃣ Ash
Distinct diamond-shaped ridges forming a crisscross pattern—one of the most recognizable bark textures.

6️⃣ Cedar
Fibrous, stringy bark that peels in long vertical strips, often with a reddish or cinnamon color.
