🌿 A different way to see a fallen branch:

- A fallen branch is not debris. It's a building under construction.
- If it's not blocking a path, leave it where it fell.
- The fungi that colonize it are decomposers doing their job.
- One fallen branch can support more than thirty species over its lifetime. 🌿

🌳 TREE BARK IDENTIFICATION GUIDE 🌳
Tree bark is one of the easiest ways to identify trees year-round—even when leaves are gone. Here are a few common bark patterns to look for:

1️⃣ Oak
Thick, rough bark with deep vertical ridges that give it a rugged, durable appearance.

2️⃣ Birch
Smooth, light-colored bark that peels in thin layers. Its papery texture makes it one of the easiest trees to recognize.

3️⃣ Pine
Reddish-brown bark with scaly or flaky plates that often appear cracked and layered.

4️⃣ Maple
Light gray and relatively smooth when young, gradually developing shallow ridges and furrows as the tree matures.

5️⃣ Ash
Distinct diamond-shaped ridges forming a crisscross pattern—one of the most recognizable bark textures.

6️⃣ Cedar
Fibrous, stringy bark that peels in long vertical strips, often with a reddish or cinnamon color.

🌿 Next time you're outside, take a closer look at the bark—it's nature’s fingerprint for identifying trees!

Callery Pear or Bradford Pear Tree

Because of their aggressive spread and impact on native ecosystems, the sale and planting of Callery pear trees (Bradford Pear) is now prohibited in Pennsylvania. Birds spread the seeds into fields, roadsides, and forests, where the trees quickly form dense thickets that crowd out native plants and reduce habitat for wildlife.

Callery pears are also known for structural weaknesses. As they mature, their branches often develop narrow angles, making them prone to splitting during storms or heavy winds. Many homeowners who once planted these trees for their fast growth and spring beauty later find themselves dealing with broken limbs, property damage, or the need for full removal.

If you currently have a Callery pear on your property, it is not illegal to keep it. However, experts encourage homeowners to consider replacing them with stronger, native tree species that support pollinators, birds, and healthy local ecosystems. Choosing native trees helps protect our landscapes while creating a more sustainable environment for future generations. 🌳❤️🌲
