COMMUNITY ENGAGED SCHOLARS NETWORK (CESN) AT UW-MILWAUKEE

The Community Engaged Scholars Network (CESN) serves faculty, researchers, and teachin

g staff that are committed to campus/community partnerships, community-based research, service-learning, and other forms of public scholarship and engagement. The network will serve as a forum for information sharing regarding funding opportunities, colleague and community collaboration, recognition events, conference RFPs, and other pertinent items for members of the UWM community who play a key role in helping the institution fulfill its civic mission. ELECTRONIC INFORMATION

The CESN listserv is operated by the Center for Community-Based Learning, Leadership, and Research at the following address: [email protected] . To become a part of the network individuals can send a request to Laurie Marks at [email protected] . Announcements will be sent monthly to the list from information collected by the CCBLLR Office, Cultures and Communities, the School of Education Office of Engaged Research, and other UWM partners who have items that would be valuable to list members. Those on the list will be sent the following types of information:
• Call for Proposals and conference announcements related to service learning, community-based research, and related topics.
• Funding opportunity announcements related to civic engagement and campus / community partnerships.
• UWM events aimed at connecting members with other members of the network across disciplines.
• Networking events that will be held for members each semester.
• Community agency requests when a specific need arises that could be examined or addressed through a campus / community partnership.
• UWM assessment data related to civic engagement and public scholarship. FACE-TO-FACE GATHERINGS

Each semester members of the CESN will be invited to a networking or outreach event where they can:
• meet fellow faculty from other academic departments who are working on similar community issues and research,
• meet non-profit partners who are engaged in issues which members of the CESN are interested in,
• engage in faculty reading groups supported by the Center for 21st Century Studies that focus on foundational texts and new, innovative work and research in the public scholarship arena,
• and learn about emerging trends and scholarship in the field. INAUGURAL EVENT

The inaugural event for the CESN will be held at the Golda Meir Library in the fourth floor conference room on Wednesday, March 27th. While the event will be open from 11:30am-1:30pm, participants should feel free to come early or late as there will be no official program. Rather, participants should stop in as is convenient based on their schedule, and sit at a table that is marked with an issue are they are interested in or engaged with. This informal gathering will allow participants to sign up for the CESN, to receive a complimentary lunch, and to meet others who are engaged in this important work. Attendees will also receive a free copy of A Crucible Moment: College Learning and Democracy’s Future, which was recently published by the AAC&U, architects of the UW System Shared Learning Goals. While this event is by invitation only, those invited are welcome to submit names of colleagues they would like added to the invite list. This initiative is co-sponsored by the Center for Community-Based Learning, Leadership, and Research, the School of Education’s Office of Engaged Research, the Center for Urban Initiatives and Research, the Center for 21st Century Studies, and the Cultures and Communities Program.

Hey CESN Network! A few people have asked me how they may be able to serve the community this year on MLK Day despite the pandemic. The CCBLLR office and the Golda Meir Library are co-sponsoring a book drive for Literacy Link, a program that creates opportunities for parents who are incarcerated at the House of Corrections to read books to their kids. A DVD recording is created of the parent reading a book, and then the book and DVD are sent to the child. Here is information about how you can purchase a book on Amazon from a list provided and have it shipped either directly to my office, or you can drop it off in the donation bin in the UWM Library Learning Commons.
