I’ve been trying to spend less time in the garden/ nursery, and more time out in nature. There are a million things I want to know about our natural landscape, so I figure I should make more time to be in it. These are pictures of some awesome native plant communities that I’ve spotted in Shreveport over the last couple of days. I hope these pictures encourage us to slow down and appreciate the natural beauty of Northwest Louisiana that we are often too busy to notice.

Also, I will be out of town this weekend. I’m going camping on the Caddo River, so I might not respond to messages as quick!

One last thing: Caddo Native Plant Company will be a vendor at the Shreveport Farmers Market June 27th, July 25th, and August 22nd !!!!

This prairie remnant by my house is looking awesome right now. I first saw this area years ago when I was driving to Walmart. There is a lot of biodiversity packed into this tiny sliver of land. It’s upsetting to think of how much prairie we have lost in the Southeast. This area has never been plowed, developed, or harshly graded. It’s a one in a million kind of spot, and once it’s gone, it can never be replaced!

Alright y’all, I’ve got some good looking ArkLaTex native plants in stock that are ready to be planted! I’ll be adding more plants to my availability sheet over the next couple of weeks. A lot of y’all have been asking about the Great Coneflower and Mountain Laurel, and they should be ready to sell in a few weeks! I have added Frogfruit (Phyla nodiflora) to my availability. The Frogfruit comes in 4 inch pots.

Hollow Joe Pye W**d (Eutrochium fistulosum)
- Long lasting pink/lavender flowers

Rattlesnake Master (Eryngium yuccifolium)
- White/Grey golf-ball shaped flowers

- Blue/Green yucca-like foliage adds texture to the landscape

Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum)

Christmas in May!

I just received a shipment of “Elf” Mountain Laurel (Kalmia latifolia). This is a rare LA native shrub that blooms in spring. If you’ve ever visited Briarwood Nature Preserve in April, then you’ve definitely noticed this plant. Mountain Laurel thrives in the same site conditions as azaleas (acidic well-draining soil, shade-part shade). This variety (Elf) is a dwarf cultivar that maxes out at 3-4 ft tall and wide. I will have to pot these up and grow them out, so they won’t be ready right away!
