🚨 Water System Update – Transmission Main Break 🚨

The City of Shreveport Water & Sewerage Department has been consulting experts who specialize in repairing major main breaks like the one we are experiencing.

Our crews are working around the clock until the issue is fully resolved. Additional specialists will arrive tomorrow morning to help assess the situation and provide support.

This is a particularly complex transmission main, and because it serves a large portion of the city, repairs are challenging and require careful coordination to keep water flowing safely.

We encourage residents to be mindful of water use while repairs are underway:
• Delay laundry if possible
• Limit outdoor watering
• Spread out high-demand activities like dishwashing
• Only run dishwashers and washing machines with full loads

Being mindful of water usage helps maintain tank levels and system pressure while crews work to restore full service safely and efficiently.

We will continue sharing updates through official City channels — follow us to stay informed.

Love Shreveport-Bossier Guessterologist Weather Report: Cold Weather Expected This Weekend Across Shreveport-Bossier Area

Shreveport, LA — A significant cold snap and potential winter weather system is forecast to impact the Shreveport-Bossier area this weekend, bringing much colder temperatures and a chance of icy precipitation, according to the latest outlook from the National Weather Service.

Forecasters say a strong Arctic air mass will push southward into Northwest Louisiana this weekend as a cold front moves into the region. Daytime highs that are expected to be in the 40s on Friday will quickly drop into the 20s on Saturday and Sunday, with overnight lows near or below freezing across the area. Freezing rain, sleet and a wintry mix are possible late Friday through Saturday and into early Sunday, which could lead to hazardous travel conditions, especially on untreated roads and bridges.

The National Weather Service has indicated an increasing chance of winter storm impacts, including freezing rain probabilities that will peak late this week and into the weekend. Officials say the storm’s exact track and precipitation type still contain uncertainty, but the potential for a wintry mix and slick roads is increasing.

In addition to bitter cold temperatures and possible icy precipitation, prolonged exposure to low temperatures can pose health risks such as frostbite and hypothermia for people and animals outdoors. Unprotected water pipes are also at risk of freezing or bursting when sustained sub-freezing temperatures occur.

Residents are urged to prepare now by checking heating systems, insulating exposed pipes, and securing pets and livestock. Motorists should consider avoiding travel if conditions deteriorate and ensure their vehicles are winter-ready, including proper tire pressure and ample antifreeze.

Love Shreveport-Bossier will continue to monitor this developing weather situation and provide updates as forecasts are refined.

Weather update..

PLEASE READ THIS AND NOT SIMPLY LOOK AT GRAPHIC.

UPDATE...This image is just one image from one forecast model. Most other models are not this extreme and not even close. But this was posted today and I wanted to explain things for you...

-A cold rain will likely overspread part of the area on Monday morning.

-In most cases, it will only be rain.

-There likely will be a layer of warm air just above the surface that is above freezing. That means any snow falling towards the ground likely will melt before reaching surface. If the layer of warm air is thin enough, you may see some flakes reach the ground.

-Another scenario is for the snow to completely melt and fall to the ground as rain or freezing rain. There is a SMALL chance it could freeze on some elevated surfaces. SMALL. Most areas will likely be above freezing.

BOTTOM LINE...Be ready for a chilly and damp Monday. The ground is very warm. Unless something drastic changes, I would say we are not in store for a big chance for winter impacts. May see something, but mainly rain. Of course, we will update.

Sharing these freezing temp tips!

With more freezing temperatures on the way in Louisiana, be sure your home’s water pipes are protected.

STEPS TO PROTECT YOUR WATER PIPES:
1. Insulate all exposed outdoor and attic pipes with weather-resistant material. Insulating foam tubing designed for pipes is easy to install and inexpensive. Make sure all surfaces of the pipe are covered.

2. Use insulating faucet covers, or wrap rags, paper, trash bags or plastic foam around outdoor faucets. Installing pressure-relief valves on outdoor faucets also helps prevent bursting of pipes that freeze.

3. Temporarily cover any vents around your home’s foundation.

4. Bring water hoses indoors.

5. Open the cabinets under the sinks in your kitchen and bathrooms to allow heated indoor air to circulate around water pipes.

6. If you normally set back your thermostat at night or when away from home, change the setting to keep some heat on until the severe freeze is over.

7. Insulate your outdoor water meter box and be sure its lid is on tight.

8. If your home has exposed pipes and a severe freeze is expected, let faucets run at a slow trickle, but don’t run a big stream of water. Too many running faucets in an area can cause drops in community water pressure and problems for firefighters responding to emergencies.

9. If you plan to leave town, consider turning off your water at the shut-off valve while faucets are running to drain your pipes. (Make sure the faucets are turned off before you turn the shut-off valve back on.)

10. If you drain your pipes, contact your electric or gas utility for instructions on protecting your water heater.

11. Be sure everyone in your household knows where the main water shut-off valve is and check it to make sure it isn’t stuck.

12. If an extended and deep freeze is expected, insulation alone may not be sufficient. Consider installing electric heat tape or cable with a built-in thermostat. Be sure the heat tape bears an Underwriters’ Laboratories (UL) seal and is in good condition. Do not overlap the tape when wrapping it around a pipe.

IF PIPES FREEZE:
If your pipes do freeze, turn off your water at the main shut-off valve. Call a plumber for help. Don't use a blowtorch or other flame source, heat lamps or electrical appliances to thaw frozen pipes. Intense heat could cause steam pressure build-up and an explosion.

If you try to thaw your own pipes, apply heat slowly, moving it toward the coldest spot on the pipe. Never concentrate heat in one spot. Cracking ice can shatter a pipe. A relatively safe and effective method is to wrap towels around the frozen section of pipe and pour hot water over them.

‼️ VOLUNTARY BOIL ADVISORY ISSUED FOR SOUTHEAST ZONE‼️

The Department of Water & Sewerage issues a voluntary boil advisory after our pumps went down at the booster station serving the Southeast Pressure Zone causing lower-than-normal water pressure. That area includes customers south of East Bert Kouns, subdivisions along Linwood Avenue south of Bert Kouns, and the region southeast of the Interstate 49 and 3132 interchange.

The system that allows Water and Sewerage to control the station remotely lost its signal causing pumps to shut down. As a precaution, we are issuing a VOLUNTARY BOIL ADVISORY effective immediately.

Once satisfactory laboratory test results confirm the water is safe, the Department of Water & Sewerage will rescind the Boil Advisory with approval from the Louisiana Department of Health. We will then immediately inform all customers of the water's safety.

Recommended Precautions:

‼️We advise all customers in the affected area to disinfect water before consumption, which includes drinking, making fountain drinks, brushing teeth, food preparation, or rinsing foods. To ensure safety, please follow these guidelines:

đź’§Boil Water: Boil water for one full minute in a clean container. Start timing after the

water has reached a rolling boil.

đź’§Improving Taste: If boiled water tastes flat, improve the flavor by shaking the water in a

clean bottle or pouring it back and forth between two clean containers.

We appreciate your understanding and cooperation during this precautionary measure to ensure public health.
