The number one mistake I see in living rooms: a rug that's too small.

Here's the rule. Either all four legs of your sofa sit on the rug, or at minimum the front two legs. Anything smaller and the rug becomes a postage stamp floating in the middle of the room, and the whole space looks off without anyone knowing why.

When in doubt, go bigger. An 8x10 is rarely big enough in a real living room. 9x12 is your friend.

The trick to a porch that actually gets used: treat it like a room.

That means a real rug (yes, outdoor rugs count). A coffee table you'd put in your living room. Cushions deep enough to sink into. A side table for the iced tea and the book you keep meaning to finish.
