We’ve been in the Sioux Falls market for over 15 years, and one thing we continue to see year after year is how many floor coating companies come and go.
This industry has become very trendy. It looks simple from the outside, and that brings in a lot of new companies. Most of them have little to no real experience, no formal training, and they rely on low pricing to win jobs.
The problem is what happens after the install.
Just this week alone, and it’s only Wednesday, I’ve looked at 3 floors that are failing. All were installed within the last 4 years. One of them wasn’t even a year old yet. Every single one of those homeowners was told they had a long-term warranty. And every single one of those companies is now out of business.
That’s the reality of this industry right now.
When a company underbids work just to get jobs, it doesn’t take long before they realize they’re not charging enough to do the job right. Instead of slowing down and fixing that, they rush the process to stay profitable. That’s where quality starts to slip. And that “15+ year warranty” doesn’t mean much if the company isn’t around in year 2.
Most coating failures we see come down to one thing, poor preparation. Prep is hard, it takes time, proper equipment, experience, and it’s not the part most companies want to spend hours on. We see this a lot with companies pushing 1 day floors. Prep is where things slow down, and instead of doing it right, it gets rushed or skipped so they can keep the job moving and install your floor in 1 day. That shortcut is exactly why so many of these floors fail.
If you’re getting multiple bids, don’t let price be the deciding factor. Dig into why one is cheaper. Ask about their experience, their prep process, who’s installing your floor, and whether the products they’re using are actually proven to last.
And most importantly, will they still be here if something goes wrong?
At Kustom Epoxy Floors, we’ve built our name on trusted quality and experience that has stood the test of time. We’re not here for a quick run. We’re here for the long haul, and that’s exactly how we approach every floor we install.
