It's Sourwood (Oxydendrum arboreum) season! I love these little sprays of white, bell-shaped flowers and so do butterflies and bees. 🐝 Sourwood honey is a delicious Southern staple. 😋

I love how the trunks of these trees curve and twist as they reach through the understory towards the sun. They can reach heights of about 30 feet and half as wide and enjoy their position as an understory tree. Their curving limbs remind me so much of the gently arching limbs of the Live Oaks from my childhood. 😍

In the fall, Sourwood trees, put on another show as their leave turn a brilliant red or reddish purple. 🍂 This makes them very easy to spot in an autumn landscape.

Fun fact: As you may assume from their name, their leaves are indeed sour!

After chatting with a neighbor yesterday about how we had not seen Chanterelles, most likely due to the extreme dry weather we had in the early part of the spring. I went out looking this morning and while I didn't find any Chanterelles, I did find Lions Mane and Reishi! 😍

Last week I was able to attend a training for SC Master Naturalists in coordination with a new program assisting SCDNR. It was a great training where we learned more about DNR as an organization and their operational goals. Keep an eye out for SC Master Naturalists assisting as DNR volunteers around the state leading nature walks and providing lots of great SC nature facts! 🐢🦌🦅🦫🐬

Unlike most reptiles, female Five-lined Skinks are known for guarding their eggs. We found this one under a rock yesterday and carefully placed the rock back so they could finish hatching. You've probably seen the younger juvenile lizards of this species with their bright blue tails. 😎

This Common Watersnake (Nerodia sipedon) is one of the snakes we see most often around here. It is nonvenemous and not aggressive. 🐍

It is commonly mistaken for a Copperhead, but there are a few ways to easily tell the difference. The water snake tends to be darker and its markings show dark upside-down triangles rather than the brown "Hershey's kisses" that are indicative of a Copperhead's pattern.

One of the things I always find interesting about these snakes is their defensive maneuver whereby they will flatten their head to make it appear larger and more triangular to mimic venomous snakes. (Pic 2)

The Common water snake can grow up to 4 feet long, and her typically found near bodies of water. Their diet consists heavily of amphibians and fish. They are also known as Banded water snake, Black water adder, Black water snake, Brown water snake, Common northern water snake, Eastern water snake, North american water snake, Northern banded water snake, or Northern water snake.

One of the main reasons I can't stay out of the woods is there's always something new happening! 😁

Pinesap (Monotropa hypopitys) is a unique chlorophyll-lacking plant found in shady wooded areas. I've usually seen it with more color which happens as it ages (pic 2).

It is in the same genus as Ghostpipe (Monotropa uniflora) but whereas Ghostpipe only has one flower per stem (pic 3), Pinesap has multiple flowers on each stem.

Since they lack chlorophyll, both plants have a unique way of getting food. They make connections with trees, gathering nutrients from them through mycorrhizal fungi in the soil. 😎

Happy Mother's Day! 🌸

We found this tiny nest today after seeing a bird diving into one of the bushes. We couldn't quite see what type of bird it was, but it appears to be a Chipping Sparrow nest. It it so small. 😊Love the gorgeous blue color!
