Godspeed, Arnold!

Godspeed, Arnold!

We are sad to announce that we lost long time Taliesin Fellow Arnold Roy last night.

Arnold joined the Fellowship in 1954 after his military service and stayed at Taliesin for the next 70 years. He worked on the construction of many Frank Lloyd Wright buildings, including Taliesin & Taliesin West. Wright wrote that Arnold “designs & builds faster than anyone in the world.” Arnold was also an architect for the legacy firm that grew out of Wright’s practice, known as Taliesin Associated Architects (TAA). After retiring from TAA, he set up his own LLC. During that time, he worked on actualizing Wright’s Nakoma Country Club of 1924 for Gold Mountain in California, and in the 2000s, Arnold was the project supervisor for The Spire at the Promenade, on Scottsdale Road and Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard, based on Wright’s 1957 design for the Arizona State Capitol.
Rest in Peace 🙏

Remembering Pedro....

Photographer Pedro Guerrero was born 100 years ago this month. At age 22, he became the favored photographer for the world’s most famous architect – Frank Lloyd Wright. Dean Robbins has his story. Pedro Guerrero spent most of his life in the Southwest and East Coast. But he’s still a Wisconsin...

Earlier this month, we had the pleasure of welcoming a group of architects and planners from SWABACK pllc of Scottsdale, Arizona on the Burnham Block. This amazing firm was founded by Vernon Swaback, an apprentice to Frank Lloyd Wright, educator, and member of the Frank Lloyd Wright Fellowship. John Sather, the firm’s managing partner, led the group to Wisconsin. Their resume of award-winning work is simply breathtaking: https://www.swaback.com/. We were honored to host them for a visit to the Burnham Block.

Despite hundreds of commissions in his home state of Wisconsin, Frank Lloyd Wright designed just one single-family home in Milwaukee.

"Form follows function" meant many things, especially if you know where to look.

Today, 125 years after it was first installed, this Louis Sullivan cartouche has been installed again on the 4th floor at City Museum.

This piece was originally created for the Gage Building in Chicago, IL. Built: 1898-1899 Removed: 2015 (Building is still there. Cartouche removed because it was deemed in poor shape.) It took the scenic route getting here, but we're thrilled it made it!

What is a cartouche? So glad you asked: It is an ornate or ornamental frame, also an oval or oblong figure (as on Egyptian monuments) enclosing a sovereign's name.

From our friends at the foundation.... Great to see students back in the studio!

Students from the University of Chicago work in the Hillside Studio at Taliesin learning about design at different scales, from architectural details to buildings to the scale of the region. The details of Hillside’s unique truss system are of particular interest to many students.
