A redesigned facade can completely transform a building's relationship with its surroundings – and this boutique dental office in Grayslake, IL, is a perfect example. a+c architects is reimagining the exterior of a former hobby store, balancing the classical architectural aesthetic required by the Village of Grayslake with a bold, forward-thinking vision for what a dental practice can be.

From the street, the updated facade reads as a respectful nod to the town's traditional character, while the light brick, black and white detailing, and clerestory windows hint at something unexpected inside. And there is plenty unexpected inside, but that's a story for our next post.

This project is currently out for bid. Stay tuned!

In the latest installment of a+c’s Reflections blog series, Founding Principal Raffi Arzoumanian explores the relationship between architecture and memory, demonstrating how materiality, light, atmosphere, and spatial experience shape how people connect with a place. From residential settings to large public gathering spaces, Raffi’s article examines how meaningful design can leave a lasting emotional imprint on the people who experience them.

Construction is progressing on the new 9,000 SF MCC Academy gymnasium in Morton Grove, IL. The foundation is laid, steel framing is up, and the walls and ceiling are taking shape.

The new facility replaces an outdated, undersized gym with expanded space for athletics, physical education, and school-wide events. Brick, metal panel, and acoustical CMUs form the exterior, while frosted glass along the upper walls will fill the interior with natural light, balanced with privacy and security for students.

More updates to come as the project moves forward.

Stair design plays a key role in shaping how light and movement are experienced within a space.

Across a+c architects' projects, open stair designs are used to maximize natural light, create a visual connection between levels, and introduce a sense of dynamism into everyday circulation. More than a means of moving between floors, stairs become spatial elements that organize light, frame views, and contribute to the overall architectural experience.

Sustainable residential design is at the core of this Carbon Neutral single-family home in a western suburb of Chicago. As we approach Earth Day, this Carbon Neutral Home, now in its final stages, reflects our ongoing commitment to high-performance, environmentally responsible architecture.

The home integrates geothermal systems and whole-house solar, with a flat roof designed for optimal solar panel installation. Expansive outdoor living areas, a large patio, and a glass-enclosed balcony strengthen the connection to the surrounding landscape, while a NanaWall system at the rear creates a seamless indoor-outdoor experience.

Our House on the Bluff project is taking shape as a uniquely sited home, with views of Lake Michigan and the ravine becoming integral to the design.

Construction continues on the façade and interiors, where thoughtful layouts, expansive glazing, and sustainable materials will create a home that balances light, openness, and warmth. The design emphasizes a strong connection to the surrounding landscape while maintaining a contemporary, timeless feel.

Raffi Arzoumanian and Joanna Zywczyk attended the 2026 Architecture and Design Film Festival, continuing their tradition of joining this annual celebration of architecture and design.

This year, they viewed Living in a Piece of Furniture: Gerrit Rietveld's Houses. In 2024, they visited the Schröder House in Utrecht, the only residential example of the De Stijl movement. Its dynamic planes, primary colors, flexible sliding walls, and seamless indoor-outdoor connections remain a powerful influence on modern architecture.

Here’s a photo Raffi captured during that visit.

Childcare design takes shape at Little Creative Minds, a new childcare center for Creative Minds Child Development Center in Chicago.

Building shafts are now in place, moving the project from renderings to construction. The structure reflects a focus on community-centered design, thoughtfully considering form, materials, and layout to support a sense of safety, comfort, and connection for children and families.

Stay tuned for the next phase, where we’ll share insights into designing interiors for classrooms and learning spaces.
