Remnant Roots Native Plant Nursery

Remnant Roots Native Plant Nursery 🪴We’re a small nursery aspiring to make native plants available in our community!

By offering locally-sourced genetics of many species, we hope to be a part of returning ecologic connectivity, biodiversity, and beauty to the modern landscape.

Most folks know and love Black-eyed Susans, but don’t appreciate how many species there are! We are excited to offer something a bit more unique than the common roadside Rudbeckia hirta. We are propagating seeds from a population of Blackbelt Black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia terranigrae) located on family land in Lincoln Co. This species is largely known only from the Blackbelt and Jackson Prairie systems of MS and AL, which makes our source-population rather strange and exciting! It was previously regarded as a form of Rudbeckia fulgida, until taxonomists split it from the genus in 2013. For those familiar with our more common Rudbeckia hirta, it differs in a number of ways. This species blooms in fall, peaking in early September. It is more strongly perennial and vegetatively propagates to produce individual colonies. These colonies can grow together to produce an impressive display amid other natives! Full sun is great, but photos below show it thriving in a dappled woodland understory. Of course, it attracts pollinators and seedheads feed birds!
