This past month, we were honored to participate in the first annual RI Co-op-erathon hosted by commonspace and in Providence. We worked together with other worker co-ops and small business owners across the state to think through how to build a more just economy and expand the commons locally. Great people and great connections!

If you aren't sure why worker owned cooperatives are so important, be on the lookout for an upcoming blog post from us soon on worker co-op values and principles for building better local businesses.

Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house, not a package was found, they all were sent out. The trees were snuggled up, in their air prune beds, waiting for the long cold to pass by overhead. And I in my pajamas with a cup of tea, just want to sit back and read and not think about any damn weeds. Until next season....

Happy holidays! Hope everyone had a relaxing winter solstice and has a very cozy winter full of books and tea and friends. We've finished up for the 2024 season but we'll be back in the spring! We got some exciting things planned so stay tuned.

Beach Plum season has come and gone. It was a really special and hectic end of summer, full of adventures exploring the Eastern Woodlands, looking for new seeds and tasty treats. There were times of beach bonfires, wandering paths through the sand dunes, and taking a journey to the center in Providence for the first time. If you are in the area, it is a must visit, especially during beach plum season. They have planted a whole native coastal eco-system, including a massive beach plum hedge that gives you a glimpse into what it was like when beach plums were a widespread coastal plant. They also have lots of fun little gifts and awesome staff that will discuss the importance of coastal plants. It really has a utopian feel to it with the windmills and all the experimental design.

Overall, we feel so blessed to be able to walk these coastlines and enjoy the plants and ecosystems that were stewarded by the Narragansett people. Sometimes, it's hard to drag yourself out to go foraging after working for 8 hours, but it really does beat sitting at home. It's always well worth the visit. Check out the save the bay center in providence, open to the public for fishing, hikes, ect. everyday and stay tuned for some more foraging tips and adventures. And check out our store to start planting beach plums this fall, it is our sacred duty to help folks plant as many beach plums as possible!

We are open for another harvest season. Before the baby trees take their long winter nap, you can order starter edible perennials for your backyard or garden. Near and far, pick up or shipping options. Check out the link in our description for more info.

Some special plants we have this season are 1st-year persimmons and pawpaws! We also have some groundnuts for sale for the first time! This plant is hard to come by, but it is an indigenous local plant.

We also have the classics, including Beach plums, hazelnut trees, cherry, peach… Along with our herbaceous perennials, including sea kale, mint, boysenberry… Something for every yard or neighborhood.

From a side quest foraging trip in providence while I was driving around for work.

I found two amazing fruit trees that have been in the neighborhoods for 40+ years. One was a Pear, the other an apple, both seemingly never treated with pesticides or fungicides, which means they are probably strong trees for this area. I asked the people who stayed there if I could forage them and they were cool with it and told me some stories about the street we were on. An older Portuguese woman even gave me some fresh tomatoes from her garden. I met some neighbors, got some tasty apples, and got some seeds to save and grow for next season. Just little fun ways to stay inspired and break through the isolation of modern life.

Be on the lookout for OG Harrington Family Pear starts and Hope St. Dreamz Apple starts.

P.s. I'd recommend not eating fruit from the ground unless you see it fall. It is fine for harvesting for seeds, though. The apples on the green towel were harvested on the grass.

Also, apparently, pears are pretty tricky to harvest. You actually want to harvest them underripe and let them ripen off the tree. A way to see if they are ripe is to turn them horizontal, and if they break, they are ok.

Summer Reading '22 ☕🪵📗
While we are already deep into a long and dry 2022, the voices and advice in this years' Earthbound Farmers' Almanac are timeless and indispensable for the times ahead. This almanac is for more than farmers, it's for anyone looking to experiment with how to be people of the earth again.

From Climate Weirdings, to plant profiles and tips, to indigenous voices on fighting ecological collapse... for a farmers' almanac, this is a page-turner, with beautiful
sketches, drawings, and comics throughout. Check it out in the N&B store, link in bio.

Buying an almanac supports the Earthbound Farmers' Almanac project on putting out a diverse array of voices on what an Earthbound Future could look like. Check out who put the project together.
