Did you know garter snakes are great for the garden? These little guys eat slugs helping protect the garden from these pests. Keeping leaves in the garden provides a place for these snakes to brumate (a form of hibernation) when the temperatures drop in the winter. This little guy made a rare winter visit in my garden yesterday.

Native Plant Spotlight. Fireweed or Chamaenerion angustifolium is a herbaceous perennial wildflower native much of the temperate northern hemisphere. This tall, showy wildflower identified by its alternate lance shaped leaves growing along a tall reddish green stem. The best identifiable feature is the large inflorescence of pink flowers at the top.
