At The Garden Company,
we believe dirt beneath fingernails is good for the soul
There's a unique May optimism in the Sierra Nevada Foothills. Ever hopeful, we watch our fickle weather, looking to Mother's Day as the traditional date for the perfect time to get out and get greening (or after May 30 above 3000 ft).
Soon the soil warms, cold temps are a memory and our sanctuary buzzes with harvest potential!
Early investment: Don't count on last year's leftovers to prime your garden, amend for a perfect start. Chicken manure, organic compost, and essential elements will reap future rewards. And amendments don't care about cold temps! At The Garden Company, we happily advise on what's best to flourish your upcoming sanctuary.
Watch the weather: If you were tempted by early spring sunshine, protect new leafy starts from cooler air. βοΈ If overnight temps drop below 40 F, tuck your babies into bed with frost blankets, burlap, or old bedsheets.
Add aromatic notes to the garden: Add parsley, sage, rosemary or thyme. If "Scarborough Fair" doesn't ring in your garden, try chives, lavender or oregano! Most herbs don't mind cold temps (but wait on leafy herbs like basil!).
Warm-Season Vegetables: Your garden is begging for its summer essentials such as tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, and squash. Get them in the ground so they can establish deep roots before the heat really arrives. πΆοΈπ
Pollinator Perennials: Add drought-tolerant favorites like salvias, yarrow, or penstemons to keep the pollinators dancing in the garden until late fall. π
Mulch, Mulch, Mulch: Apply organic mulch around plants to block weeds and keep soil moist. Keep it 4-6 inches from the base of your stems. We have plenty of E.B. Stone Big Harvest to mulch away - it's good for the soil, too!
And keep out the baddies! πͺ²
Guardian Care for New Starts: Watch your new growth; shoot aphids off with a blast of water or use neem oil for infestations. Keeping things organic ensures our sanctuary stays safe for the birds and bees, too.
