Before contacting a residential designer, it helps to gather a few basic items:

Property address
Survey or plot plan, if available
Photos of the site or existing home
Inspiration images
Must-have spaces
Garage and storage needs
Rough budget comfort level
Timeline expectations
Known site concerns

You do not need to have everything figured out before starting the conversation.

The more organized the early information is, the easier it is to define the scope and determine whether the project is a good fit.

I added a simple Home Planning Input Form here:

I am no longer using the temporary home-planning link that was shared earlier.

The correct page is now part of the Chris Neidig Residential Design website:

This is a simple Home Planning Input Form for people who may be thinking about a future home, addition, remodel, garage, downsizing, or aging-in-place project.

You do not need to be ready to start a project.

It is just a way to organize early ideas and think through what may matter before design work begins.

Before a home project becomes drawings, there is usually a stage where the homeowner is still trying to organize the idea.

What spaces are needed?
How should the home flow?
What matters most day to day?
What does the site allow?
What should be thought through before design work begins?

That early planning stage matters.

The form is simply a way to organize early thoughts before a more formal design conversation.

A good residential design process does not start with drawings.

It starts with understanding how the home needs to work.

Family size, storage, privacy, traffic flow, garage access, outdoor living, future flexibility, aging-in-place concerns, site conditions, budget expectations, and contractor coordination all affect the direction of a project before a floor plan ever gets refined.

At Chris Neidig Residential Design, my role is to help homeowners turn early ideas into organized, code-ready residential design documents that can be used for pricing, permitting conversations, and construction planning.

I’m still looking for a few people willing to test a short residential-planning intake.

You do not need to be building right now.

This is useful for anyone who has ever remodeled, added on, looked at house plans online, thought about building someday, bought land, considered downsizing, planned for aging in place, or felt unsure what kind of home layout would actually fit their life.

The intake takes about 10–15 minutes and gives a preliminary planning snapshot at the end.

I’m mainly trying to see whether the questions make sense and whether the planning feedback is useful.

One of the hardest parts of planning a home project is often the very beginning.

Before there are drawings, bids, permits, or construction, people are usually trying to answer questions like:

What kind of layout actually fits us?
How much space do we really need?
What should we think through before talking to a builder?
How do we avoid wasting time on plans that are not realistic?

I’m gathering input through a short residential-planning intake to better understand that early decision-making process.

The intake takes about 10–15 minutes and gives a preliminary planning snapshot at the end.

I’m doing a short residential-planning research intake to better understand how people approach the early stages of building, remodeling, adding on, or looking at house plans online.

This is not only for people building right now. I’m also interested in hearing from anyone who has ever thought about building someday, searched for house plans, struggled with layout decisions, or wondered where to start.

The intake takes about 10–15 minutes and gives a preliminary planning snapshot at the end.

Your input would be genuinely helpful.

It’s always interesting to see how a project evolves from concept to something more complete.More coming soon.

I’m doing a short research study to better understand how people approach the early stages of planning a new home.

If you have ever looked at house plans online, thought about building a home, or felt unsure where to begin, your input would be genuinely helpful.

The intake takes about 10–15 minutes, and at the end you’ll receive a preliminary planning snapshot based on your answers.
