Yard Notes 🌿 | Hydrangeas β€” The Cape Cod Classic

If there's one plant that defines a Cape Cod summer, it's the hydrangea. But keeping them healthy and blooming takes a little know-how.

Here are a few simple tips to get the most out of yours this season:

πŸ’§ Water deeply, not daily. Hydrangeas prefer a deep soak 2–3 times a week over shallow watering every day. Get the water to the roots, not just the surface.

β˜€οΈ Morning is best. Water in the morning so leaves dry before evening β€” this helps prevent mildew and disease.

πŸͺ£ Water at the base, not the blooms. Direct your hose or drip line at the soil around the base of the plant, not the flowers or leaves. Wet foliage invites fungal disease, and water on the blooms can cause them to brown and fade faster. Getting the water straight to the roots is where it does the most good anyway.

🌿 Watch for wilting. A little afternoon droop on a hot day is normal. If they're still drooping in the morning, they're telling you they're thirsty.

πŸͺ΄ Mulch is your friend. A 2–3 inch layer of mulch around the base holds in moisture and keeps roots cool during summer heat.

Got hydrangeas that aren't looking their best? Give us a call β€” we'd love to help. (508) 398-8151

🌿 Yard Notes β€” Week 3: Mulch is a tool, not a topping.

The most common mulch mistake we see? Too much of it β€” piled up against tree trunks like a volcano. That traps moisture against the bark, invites rot, and slowly stresses the tree. The second most common? Mulch so deep across beds that water and air can't get through.

Two to three inches is the sweet spot. Keep it pulled back a few inches from trunks and stems so the base can breathe. Refresh it when it thins out β€” once a year is usually plenty.

If your beds could use a fresh round of mulch this season, give us a call.
