Mother Nature has been keeping us on our toes! This spring our weather has jumped from 70-degrees and sunshine to a biting 28 degrees and SNOW. This has happened several times in a month! While fern leaf peonies are hardy, these extreme swings can cause frost damage to the young buds and stems. If left alone, those damaged bits become an open invitation for disease to set in and spread. To keep our plants healthy and our future blooms beautiful, we hand-check each and every one of our 400 peonies. It’s a labor of love. It makes me sad to administer the pruning snip but worth it for the health of our heirloom peonies!

I've always been a muser. These days I ruminate while working in the peony field. Recently I was pondering something I had read. It prompted me to try to identify my most precious treasure. First, I thought my treasures were my memories. I realized however that memories are made by and stored in my healthy brain. Without a healthy brain, so many things that bring me joy would not be recognized and cherished. Alzheimer's disease and dementia are diseases that steal your healthy brain. To bring attention to brain health during June (Alzheimer's and Brain Awareness Month), we have listed additional double fern-leaf peonies for sale. Our fern-leaf peonies put on quite the show in May. They keep my garden boots spinning. First, they bloom and then demand a haircut. They are such divas!
Peony pics from USDA Zone 5a (near Sioux Falls, SD) A proud peony momma sent pictures of her 6 -year-old -plant. Who could blame her for being proud- her peony is stunning! The pics were taken two days apart and show what some really warm days can do! She credits her flower power to full sun southern exposure and a doting husband who puts the peony to bed each winter with a light blanket of mulch.
I can't let May close without sharing the source of my flower-power. Mom inspired my passion for flowers. She credits her still naturally brown hair with all the time she spent digging in the ground! Hugs to all the moms in May!

"A peony for your thoughts". This time of year, my mind is always on peonies. Our first blossom started to open on May 4th. The double red fern-leaf peonies are always the first to open. For the next several weeks I will wake to see crimson spreading across our peony field. Our plants are loaded with buds and I'm looking forward to seeing them all in bloom.

I’m always excited for June. Summer and all its fun activities and events begin in June. It is also Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month. For those that have followed Laughing Frog Peony since our beginnings in 2016, you know that our double fern-leaf peonies have been in my family for decades. Grandma Mabel was the original grower of these beautiful flowers. Grandma Mabel had the most amazing green thumb; she also had Alzheimer’s disease. In the US nearly 7 million American’s are living with Alzheimer’s dementia. In my home state of South Dakota, it’s estimated that 16,500 residents (approximately 10.5%) age 65 and older were affected by the disease in 2020. Like many families ours has continued to feel the effects of Alzheimer’s disease. Grandma Nyla, Uncle Wayne and Uncle Pete joined Grandma Mabel as Alzheimer’s victims. Other family members are dealing with the challenges of living with the disease.
When we launched our farm, we promised ourselves that we would always use a portion of our profits from our Etsy shop to support the Alzheimer's Association. I have also joined Alzheimer's Association- South Dakota as a Volunteer Community Educator. This role allows me to share with others the educational programs developed by the Alzheimer’s Association and the resources available free of charge to assist those living with Alzheimer’s and dementia.
Today we continue to grow flowers so that we can donate to the Alzheimer’s Association. The peonies are growing so well that we decided to sell additional double red fern-leaf peonies this year.
