A hugelkultur mound can stay moist for weeks with little to no irrigation.
A few hours of building can lead to years of easier, more productive harvests.
Buried wood works like a reservoir — it soaks up rainwater and slowly feeds moisture back to plant roots.
BUILDING LAYERS:
Bottom layer: large logs and thick branches (hardwood breaks down more slowly)
Second layer: smaller branches, twigs, and wood chips
Third layer: leaves, grass clippings, and straw
Top layer: compost and garden soil, about 6–8 inches deep
MOUND SHAPE:
Run the mound north to south for more even sunlight
Freshly built height is usually 3–4 feet
Sides should slope around 45 degrees for support
Expect the mound to settle roughly 30% during the first year
WATER BEHAVIOR:
New wood absorbs rainfall and stores it below the surface
Roots grow downward toward the moisture inside the mound
The outer layer may dry out fast, but the center stays damp
Established mounds often need very little extra watering
BEST CROPS:
Year one: squash, pumpkins, melons (they love the rich nutrients)
Year two: tomatoes, cucumbers, beans
Year three and beyond: almost anything — the soil becomes deep, loose, and fertile
Hugelkultur transforms yard debris into a water-saving garden bed.
